Job description

About Scrumconnect Consulting

Scrumconnect Consulting is a multi-award-winning digital consultancy whose work has positively influenced the lives of over 40 million UK citizens. We deliver impactful technology solutions across UK government departments, working at the forefront of user-centred design, agile delivery, and scalable digital services that genuinely make a difference.

Location: Swansea; 60% on-site presence required

Working Pattern: Full-time, 3 days per week

? Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Work on a high-impact UK public sector digital programme, delivering services used by millions
  • Opportunity to be based in Swansea, with relocation support of up to £5,000
  • Visa sponsorship available for eligible candidates
  • Strong focus on work-life balance with a flexible hybrid model (3 days onsite)
  • Be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary agile environment alongside civil servants and industry experts

Based in Swansea, South Wales - three days per week on-site

This role requires three days per week at our client's Swansea offices and we want to be straightforward about that. Swansea is a coastal city offering a genuinely excellent quality of life: lower cost of living than London or Birmingham, shorter commutes, and the kind of work-life balance that is hard to find elsewhere. If you have spent years commuting into a major city, working three days a week by the sea without taking a pay cut may be more appealing than you expect. The work is meaningful too, public sector digital delivery that directly impacts people's lives across the UK. We also offer relocation support of £3,000 - £5,000 to help make the move straightforward.

About the Role As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will design, build, manage, and support the critical infrastructure services that underpin internal operations and high-volume, public-facing digital services. Operating as a core member of a blended agile squad, you will play a pivotal role in enabling agile delivery teams through secure-by-design principles, modernising Legacy estates, and supporting cloud adoption on AWS.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate secure-by-design cloud and platform services on AWS, supporting microservices and serverless workloads for high-volume digital services.
  • Enable delivery teams to build and run Java Spring Boot Back End services and serverless applications, integrated with Ruby on Rails and React front-ends.
  • Support the migration from Legacy technologies (including AIX, Oracle, and Natural/Adabas) to strategic, API-led architectures, ensuring continuity of service while improving resilience and performance.
  • Establish and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, infrastructure as code, release orchestration, and automated testing to accelerate delivery while maintaining governance.
  • Implement engineering guardrails, least-privilege identity and access management (IAM), tagging strategies, and observability frameworks to proactively monitor and reduce the mean time to detect and resolve issues.
  • Work collaboratively with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations, ensuring systems are integrated, delivered, and operated as required
  • Troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities, breaking problems down into component parts to diagnose root causes.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience delivering secure, scalable cloud and platform services within large-scale government or enterprise environments.
  • Practitioner-level capability in IT Infrastructure, Systems Design, Systems Integration, and Troubleshooting, as defined by the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework.
  • Proven expertise in AWS cloud-native architectures, including compute, storage, networking, and identity management.
  • Strong track record in Infrastructure as Code and configuration tools (such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and Ansible) and CI/CD automation.
  • Demonstrable experience working to the GDS Service Standard, the Technology Code of Practice, and secure-by-design principles.
  • Experience operating effectively within blended, multi-supplier agile squads, demonstrating strong collaboration and knowledge-transfer skills.
  • Eligibility for BPSS clearance, with the readiness and eligibility to obtain SC clearance required for production environment access.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting digital transformation programmes that involve Legacy modernisation, such as mainframe-adjacent systems, AIX, Oracle, Natural, and Adabas.
  • Relevant industry certifications (for example, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, ITIL Foundation, CompTIA Security+).
  • Experience integrating with cross-government platforms, such as GOV.UK One Login, GOV.UK Wallet, GOV.UK Pay, and GOV.UK Notify.

Technical Stack Context

  • Backend: Java SpringBoot.
  • Serverless: AWS Lambda/Node.js (Serverless Framework).
  • Front-end: Ruby on Rails/React.
  • Legacy: Java, AIX, Oracle, Natural and Adabas.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Primary focus on AWS.

Working Environment

Client processes about 100 million transactions annually, with 84% handled digitally and manages nearly 5 billion digital interactions per year. The successful candidate will be Embedded in a blended squad working in a scaled agile environment aligned to the GDS Service Standard and the Technology Code of Practice.

  • Generous annual leave entitlement
  • Critical illness cover
  • Relocation support of £3,000 - £5,000
  • Visa sponsorship for eligible candidates
