Job description
The University of Virginia Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Manager of Microsoft Enterprise Services to lead a team of engineers responsible for the reliability, security, and evolution of the University's core Microsoft platforms. This is a hands-on technical leadership role with formal management responsibility.
The ideal candidate combines deep Microsoft platform expertise with the ability to mentor and guide a highly technical engineering team. This leader will own service outcomes, contribute directly to engineering and architecture decisions, and serve as a strategic partner to ITS leadership.
This position reports to the Associate Director of Cloud Platforms and is based on Grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia with a hybrid work schedule. Responsibilities Team Leadership & Management
- Lead and develop a team of Microsoft platform engineers, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and career growth
- Own team priorities, operational planning, and delivery outcomes while balancing support and project-based initiatives
- Foster a culture of engineering excellence, documentation, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Establish operational standards, team processes, and service expectations aligned with ITS goals
Platform Engineering & Architecture
- Own the lifecycle, reliability, and modernization of core Microsoft platforms including Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Windows Server environments, and Azure-based infrastructure
- Serve as a hands-on technical contributor for engineering efforts, complex troubleshooting, and architecture decisions
- Drive automation initiatives using PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform, and related tooling to improve operational efficiency and scalability
- Lead platform migrations, upgrades, licensing initiatives, and rollout of new enterprise services
Service Ownership & Operations
- Ensure enterprise services meet institutional standards for security, availability, compliance, and performance
- Partner closely with ITS Security, Networking, Infrastructure, and ITSM teams on cross-functional initiatives
- Maintain operational documentation, technical standards, runbooks, and change management practices for supported services
- Support incident response, root cause analysis, and ongoing service improvement efforts
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience, * Three or more years of experience managing or leading IT engineering, infrastructure, or platform teams
- Demonstrated hands-on expertise with two or more of the following: Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, or Windows Server administration
- Experience supporting Microsoft Azure infrastructure including Entra ID, Azure virtual machines, networking, or related cloud services
- Strong troubleshooting and operational support experience managing complex enterprise platforms
- Experience collaborating across technical and non-technical stakeholder groups
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, * Experience leading shared enterprise services within a large and complex organization
- Deep expertise with Microsoft 365 administration and Exchange Online
- Experience with Microsoft security technologies including Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Identity, and/or Microsoft Purview
- Experience developing PowerShell automation and operational scripting at scale
- Prior experience supporting higher education IT environments
Certifications
- Microsoft certifications such as MS-102, AZ-104, SC-300, or equivalent
