Job description
We are seeking a strategic and execution-focused Director of Software Engineering to lead the transformation of Walmart's Tax-Exempt technology ecosystem into a unified omni-channel platform serving both brick-and-mortar and eCommerce experiences across Walmart and Sam's Club. This leader will drive the modernization, consolidation, and scalability of tax-exempt capabilities while ensuring compliance, operational excellence, and exceptional customer experiences.
This role is responsible for building and leading a high-performing U.S.-based engineering organization focused on delivering resilient, scalable, and compliant solutions that simplify tax exempt purchasing for customers across all channels. The Director will partner closely with Product, Architecture, Tax, Compliance, Legal, Operations, and business stakeholders to accelerate the technology roadmap while reducing compliance risk and enabling long-term platform growth.
The ideal candidate combines deep engineering leadership with strong architectural vision, operational rigor, stakeholder management, and the ability to translate evolving tax laws and regulatory requirements into scalable technical solutions.
What You'll Do
Lead Omni-Channel Tax Exempt Transformation
- Define and execute the engineering strategy for a unified Tax-Exempt platform spanning:
- Walmart stores
- Walmart eCommerce
- Sam's Club stores
- Sam's Club digital experiences
- Drive consolidation of fragmented systems and workflows into a scalable enterprise platform with shared services and consistent customer experiences.
- Enable seamless omni-channel tax exempt journeys including registration, validation, purchasing, renewals, audits, and customer support.
Drive Engineering Excellence
- Establish and scale engineering best practices across architecture, development, testing, security, observability, and operational reliability.
- Build a culture centered on engineering quality, accountability, automation, and continuous improvement.
- Improve platform resiliency, scalability, performance, and maintainability while reducing operational and compliance risk.
- Champion modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, cloud-native architecture, automated testing, infrastructure as code, and developer productivity tooling.
Architect for Scale and Compliance
- Lead architectural direction for enterprise-grade tax exempt systems handling high transaction volumes and complex compliance requirements.
- Ensure solutions are designed with strong governance, auditability, traceability, and data integrity controls.
- Partner with enterprise architecture teams to define standards, reusable patterns, APIs, and integration strategies across Walmart and Sam's ecosystems.
- Balance speed of delivery with long-term sustainability and regulatory compliance.
Accelerate Business Roadmap Delivery
- Partner with Product and business stakeholders to translate strategic priorities into executable engineering roadmaps.
- Drive predictable delivery across multiple concurrent initiatives while managing technical debt and platform modernization.
- Create execution transparency through measurable outcomes, operational metrics, and delivery governance.
- Identify opportunities to simplify customer experiences and unlock new business capabilities through technology innovation.
Partner Across Business and Compliance Functions
- Build strong partnerships with Tax, Legal, Compliance, Finance, Product, Operations, and Store organizations.
- Develop a deep understanding of federal, state, and local tax-exempt regulations and ensure engineering solutions align with evolving legal requirements.
- Act as a trusted technical advisor to executive stakeholders on compliance risk, platform strategy, and investment priorities.
- Lead cross-functional communication during audits, regulatory reviews, and major business initiatives.
Build and Develop a High-Caliber Engineering Organization
- Recruit, retain, and develop exceptional U.S.-based engineering talent with a strong focus on technical excellence and ownership.
- Create a culture of mentorship, inclusion, innovation, and high performance.
- Develop organizational capabilities in distributed systems, compliance engineering, platform engineering, and enterprise architecture.
- Establish clear career growth paths, succession planning, and leadership development across the organization.
Requirements

Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
Option 2: 8 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
3 years' supervisory experience.
