Job description

Join our dynamic team as the Manager of IT Field Engineering, where you will lead a talented group of technical professionals responsible for deploying, maintaining, and supporting our extensive IT infrastructure across our beautiful, historic campus. This role offers an exciting opportunity to oversee critical systems, ensure seamless network operations, and implement innovative solutions that drive business success. You will be at the forefront of managing complex projects, fostering vendor relationships, and ensuring the highest standards of information security and system reliability. Your energetic leadership will empower your team to deliver exceptional technical support and maintain our organization's technological edge., Reporting to the Director of IT Infrastructure, the Manager of IT Field Engineering supervises a team of field engineers to support the university's network and communication physical infrastructure., * Designing and maintaining underground low-voltage and fiber optic cabling, including Miss Utility response.

  • Alongside IT project managers and campus partners in the Office of University Architect, design and deploy IT technology infrastructure into campus construction projects
  • Perform IT network equipment lifecycle annual replacements
  • Troubleshooting user issues through ticket escalation and network documentation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of underground and in-building cabling.
  • Coordinate work by outside contractors

Responsibilities of this position as a team leader:

  • Provide leadership, vision, strategy, and relate the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Mentor and encourage professional development of team
  • Perform annual performance evaluations of direct reports, bringing concerns to department leadership.
  • Ensure that team members have necessary safety training and qualifications

This position requires working outdoors in all seasons, and in/around utility maintenance holes., 25% - Design and Deploy:

  • Oversee new installations. Along with colleague project managers, deploy infrastructure technology in new construction and facility renovations.

20% - Maintenance:

  • Maintain the university's cable plant, including fiber optic and copper cable diagnostic and repair.
  • Maintain parts inventory to ensure adequate spares are available.
  • Alongside colleagues, respond to Virginia Utility Protection Service ("Miss Utility") requests to ensure the university's underground infrastructure is protected.

20% - Support:

  • Offer third-tier support for physical network issues, including interacting with members of the campus community.

20% - Documentation:

  • Maintain and improve network documentation, incorporating updates into the university's GIS systems.

15% - Team Supervision:

  • Set clear goals and priorities, offer constructive feedback, mentor colleagues.

Pay: Up to $101,500.00 per year

Requirements

Do you have experience in Vendor relationship building?, Do you have a High school diploma or GED?, * High school diploma or equivalent education.

  • Significant experience with low voltage, fiber optic utility work (typically 5+ years).
  • Experience team management in support of IT (typically 3+ years).
  • Strong understanding of low-voltage and fiber optic cabling standards.
  • Demonstrated experience with cabling terminations and repair.
  • Experience leading a team, including professional growth.
  • Experience supervising contractor personnel working with cabling infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in equipment installation and basic configuration, cable management, and project oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay current with industry technical and organizational trends, products, services, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with Miss Utility response.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a strong service orientation, and ability to deliver outstanding customer service, effectively interface with technical and non-technical staff at all organizational levels, vendor support and sales resources, as well as work collaboratively with in a team environment.
  • Independent, self-starter with the ability to exercise sound judgment while managing multiple work assignments concurrently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates or technical degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Relevant telecom/network certifications, such as BICSI RCDD.
