Job description
- Collaborate with vendors/manufacturers to develop and evaluate new Fiber Optic solutions and come up with implementation plans for incorporating them into the network
- Design and specify structured cabling systems (fiber, copper, cable trays/duct banks) for network layers at hyperscale data centers
- Develop standards, reference designs, and installation guidelines for physical network/cabling deployments and structured cabling systems
- Focus on ambiguous problem areas in existing or new network architecture and systems development initiatives, propose and deliver projects that have a significant business and/or customer impact
- Manage fiber vendors and contractors; perform quality control and commissioning of fiber bundles and structured cabling systems
- Perform mitigation analysis and site inspections to validate as-built conditions, ensuring compliance with design and operational requirements
- Monitor network/system/link quality and build mechanism to remediate large scale events and improve health of our links
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues that are causal to fiber connectivity and fiver plant design
- Maintain documentation, drawings, and asset records for physical fiber network components across global sites
A day in the life On an everyday basis as an engineer or scientist on our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers' requirement on interconnect solutions, and work backwards to devise fiber connectivity solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with sister teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.
You'll bridge design, construction, and operations, ensuring that every layer of physical networking from fiber trunks to copper patching meets high standards of performance, reliability, and scalability.
About the team Within AWS Networking, the Network Product Development (NPD) organization is responsible for designing the network fiber connectivity designs and owning the implementation plans that power the global AWS network. Beyond product delivery, we actively manage the fiber infrastructure in a network that grows by 70% annually. This means tracking key business and operational metrics to ensure that we operate smoothly and minimize or eliminate customer impact due to device related issues for a transparent AWS customer experience.

Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Communications Engineering or a related field
- 1+ years of data center experience, or experience with cabling infrastructure best practices and methodologies
- Expertise in industry standards such as ANSI/TIA, BICSI and other relevant structured cabling guidelines
- 2+ years of experience developing test requirement and scripts for fiber validation and characterization
- Proven ability to coordinate with cross-functional teams and external vendors on large-scale projects
- Strong skills in reviewing and interpreting technical drawings, cable schedules, and documentation management, Master's degree, or PhD and 3+ years of industry or academic research experience
- Certifications such as BICSI, RCDD, etc.
- Expertise in hardware and systems design and development
- Experience with pluggable optics (i.e SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP-DD, OSFP)
- Experience working in hyper-scale cloud, AI or high-performance computing environments
- Experience working with ODM and CM suppliers of Optical Modules
