Job description

The Quality Assurance Technician supports a quality-focused vision by ensuring that all finished snack products meet strict food safety, regulatory, and internal quality standards. Working closely with manufacturing and fryer operators, this role monitors product attributes, verifies compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and helps maintain a clean, safe, and efficient production environment on the 2nd shift., * Adhere to all current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food safety requirements, and company policies at all times.

  • Check the specific gravity of each incoming load of potatoes and document results according to established procedures.
  • Measure chip moisture levels and promptly notify fryer operators of results so corrective actions can be taken when necessary.
  • Check salt content and seasoning levels of chips and work with production leads to ensure these remain within target ranges.
  • Perform organoleptic evaluations of chips, including assessment of defects, color, and flavor, and collaborate with fryer operators and leads to ensure finished product meets company and customer standards.
  • Test frying oils for free fatty acids (FFAs) and immediately communicate results to fryer operators so they can take corrective actions as needed.
  • Verify net weights, coding, and packaging integrity of finished products to confirm compliance with company, customer, and regulatory requirements, and to validate checks performed by machine operators.
  • Check the oxygen content of finished product bags and record findings accurately.
  • Verify metal detector performance according to established schedules, assist leads with checks as needed, verify results, and take appropriate action in case of any failure.
  • Verify and document conformance to GMPs, including completing required logs and records in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Inspect production lines at start-up and during changeovers, using test swabs as needed to confirm cleaning effectiveness and minimize the risk of mixed products.
  • Identify out-of-specification products using QC Hold tags, complete all required paperwork, ensure product is properly segregated to prevent shipment, collect samples, evaluate them, and summarize results.
  • Collect raw material, in-process, and finished product samples using approved methods and maintain proper sample identification and handling.
  • Test raw materials, in-process, and finished products according to established procedures and specifications, and document all results clearly and accurately.
  • Monitor production activities to ensure food safety and quality standards are consistently achieved throughout the shift.
  • Communicate test results and quality findings clearly and promptly to appropriate staff, including operators, leads, and management.
  • Assist operators and leads as needed to support production and quality objectives.
  • Assist in training new employees and temporary staff on quality procedures, GMPs, and testing methods as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of customer and product development samples in accordance with internal guidelines.
  • Input quality and production information into appropriate databases and software programs accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Document and log all required information, including test results, inspections, and corrective actions, ensuring records are complete and legible.
  • Alert management immediately to any problems or anomalies found during the frying or production process that may impact food safety or product quality.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area, including equipment and surrounding environment, in line with sanitation and safety expectations.
  • Communicate effectively and efficiently with the rest of the team to coordinate activities and resolve issues.

Work Environment

This role operates on the 2nd shift, typically from 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., with a 12-hour shift structure that may include overtime as needed. The position requires frequent standing, grasping, reaching, pushing, and climbing, with lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Stooping, kneeling, and crouching occur occasionally, while sitting and crawling are rare. The job demands continuous reasoning, remembering, and mathematical reasoning, along with frequent use of language skills for communication. You work primarily indoors in a production facility, with occasional outside work and frequent temperature changes. Temperatures can occasionally exceed 100°F or fall below 32°F depending on the season. The environment includes continuous loud ambient noise that may require shouting to communicate, close proximity to moving parts, and occasional work with chemicals. There is rare exposure to open electric current and rare conditions that may require use of a respirator. The production floor is fast-paced, wet, oily, and noisy, and you will regularly work near high-temperature frying equipment and oils while following strict safety and food safety protocols., Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, for all positions located in the city and county of San Francisco, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

  • Physical ability to frequently stand, grasp, reach, push, climb, and lift/carry up to 50 pounds during a 12-hour shift.
  • Continuous reasoning, memory, and mathematical reasoning skills to interpret data and make sound decisions.
