Job description
Owner.com's restaurant-commerce platform is growing rapidly, and our build pipelines must keep pace. We're hiring a mission-driven Staff Build Engineer to own CI/CD across backend, frontend, AND mobile-iOS build pipeline experience is absolutely required. You'll ensure engineers can ship confidently to production and App Stores, quickly and reliably, with minimal overhead and maximal uptime.
Your builds power everything from Node.js microservices and web storefronts to iOS and Android apps used by restaurants, diners, and Owner.com's back-office teams.
How you'll make an impact
- Own and scale build automation - design, build, and maintain our CI/CD infrastructure (pipelines, runners, artifact storage, signing agents, self-hosted macOS runners); ensure developers across backend, frontend, and mobile can iterate quickly without worrying about builds breaking down
- Take charge of our mobile pipelines, with particular focus on iOS: automate versioning, provisioning profile management, keychain handling, automated signing, .ipa generation, TestFlight distribution, and App Store submission via Fastlane or native tooling
- Embed quality and traceability into build stages - integrate linting, on-device tests (XCTest, Espresso, Appium), code coverage metrics, and build-state dashboards to reduce flakiness and turnaround time
- Apply an SRE mindset to delivery - model build success/failure ratios as SLIs, define error budgets, track pipeline latency (time to green), and build alerts so broken builds are fixed within minutes
- Automate for speed and reliability - build caching, parallel job orchestration, staging environment mirroring (via Terraform), and fast rollback workflows so every pipeline is idempotent and traceable.
- Champion cross-team collaboration - coach developers on writing reliable Makefile/Gradle/Xcode configurations, secure signing practices, and branching models.
- Lead incident response for build failure - serve on rotational pager for CI systems, drive blameless post-mortems, and automate resilient fallback logic (e.g. fallback runners, sourced caching).
- Strategize adoption of next-gen tools - evaluate options like GitHub's macOS runners, Bamboo, Bitrise, or Codemagic to support future iOS scale and cross-platform parity.
Who you'll work with
- Engineers across backend, frontend, and mobile in multiple time zones
- Quality and SRE teams to drive observability and incident workflows
- Product and restaurant-ops teams to align build and release cadence with customer delivery timelines
Requirements
- 5+ years as a Build, CI/CD, or Release Engineer, with strong ownership of automation pipelines in production environments
- Proven, recent hands-on ownership of iOS build pipelines: code signing, provisioning, Fastlane or Xcode Cloud automation, TestFlight/App Store delivery - for teams shipping multiple iOS apps per year.
- Experience building and operating Android CI/CD pipelines: including Gradle, keystore management, .aab signing, Play Store upload
- Deep familiarity with CI/CD orchestration tools (GitHub Actions, Buildkite, Jenkins, CircleCI, Bitrise), runners management, and certificates/security models
- Strong scripting and automation skills (Python, Bash, Ruby, or Fastlane config languages)
- Infrastructure-as-code chops (Terraform/CloudFormation), containerization (Docker), and runner provisioning
- Solid grasp of distributed build topology, artifact caching, and scaling runners on-demand
- Ability to debug build failures across layers-local machine, remote runner, CI agent, or test environment
- Excellent written and spoke communication-able to document flows, onboarding, and provide technical training
Bonus Experience (Nice to have)
- Experience working in fast-growing mobile teams shipping to both App Store and Google Play
- Exposure to GitOps or mobile-focused platforms (App Center, Bitrise Enterprise, Codemagic)
- Familiarity with cross-platform apps (React Native, Flutter) and their idiosyncratic build flows
- Prior experience operating self-hosted macOS build farms or dealing with Apple's signing complexities at scale
- Past work in regulated environments (PCI-DSS, SOC 2) that required built-in signing and verification pipelines
- Background in SRE platform or DevOps roles with a focus on latency SLIs, error budgets for build systems
