The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
This position is part of the Distribution Control Center (DCC) Technology Oversight and Delivery Team focused on Advanced Applications. We bridge the gap between our software vendor and Power Grid Operations by testing the Distribution Management System (DMS) applications using engineering knowledge to: trouble shoot Distribution Power Flow (DPF), assure proper performance by thoroughly testing the software before installing in a Production environment , work with vendors to improve performance, review real world events and work with our Grid Management partners to prepare circuits for automated fault isolation and service restoration. You will learn these responsibilities under the supervision of our more experienced engineers, providing a firm foundation for your growth as an engineer., * Ensuring the DMS Power Flow and Advanced Applications run correctly, and issues are addressed including data is updated/corrected as needed, initiating investigations into equipment problems, etc.
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
- In addition to required degree, two (2) years minimum required related experience
- A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree, * Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
- Experience in the utility industry
- Experience working in the Electric Utility power distribution systems.
- Foundational understanding of Transmission & Distribution work processes
- Foundational knowledge of Distribution Control Center and Grid Management processes
- Foundational knowledge of DMS/DSCADA/OMS systems including Power Flow Analysis supporting the advanced functions.
- Foundational understanding DMS/DSCADA substation and field device operations characteristics and functional checkout
- Proficient in engineering theories and principles
- Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in principles of project management
- Working knowledge of Python
Benefits & conditions
- Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility.
