CFA Institute is seeking a Director, Standards and Metadata to lead the evolution of content standards and metadata strategies that power publishing, learning, and digital experiences across our global ecosystem.
The Director, Standards and Metadata is responsible for defining, governing, and evolving enterprise content standards and metadata frameworks that enable scalable, interoperable, and high-quality content across CFA Institute's global ecosystem. This role establishes best practices and new approaches for structured content, taxonomy, metadata, and semantic enrichment to support publishing, learning, discovery, and AI-driven use cases. The Director, Standards and Metadata integrates cross-functional perspectives across Publishing Technology, Content Authoring, Education, Product, and AI Enablement to solve complex, systemic challenges related to content structure, reuse, and discoverability. This role ensures that standards and metadata practices align with enterprise objectives, external industry standards, and emerging technologies.
What You'll Do
Standards & Metadata Strategy
- Define and evolve enterprise content standards, metadata models, and taxonomy frameworks supporting the full content lifecycle
- Establish scalable approaches for structured content, semantic tagging, and content interoperability across platforms
- Align standards with industry frameworks (e.g., XML, DITA, Dublin Core, schema.org) and emerging AI/semantic technologies
- Drive adoption of consistent metadata practices to enable discoverability, personalization, analytics, and reuse
Governance & Best Practice Development
- Establish governance models, policies, and quality controls for metadata and content standards Create and maintain documentation, guidelines, and training for enterprise adoption
- Lead continuous improvement of standards and practices, introducing innovative approaches in new or evolving domains
- Ensure alignment with accessibility, compliance, and global content requirements
Cross-Functional Integration
- Partner with Publishing Technology, Authoring, Education, Product, and AI Enablement teams to embed standards into workflows and systems
- Ensure metadata and standards are fully integrated into content creation, transformation, and delivery pipelines
- Facilitate alignment across workstreams with complex interdependencies, resolving conflicts and driving consistency
- Represent standards and metadata strategy in cross-functional and enterprise forums
AI, Data & Content Intelligence Enablement
- Enable AI-driven use cases through structured metadata, including content tagging, recommendation engines, and personalization
- Collaborate with AI Enablement teams to support machine learning models, knowledge graphs, and semantic search capabilities
- Define data structures and metadata schemas that support analytics, reporting, and performance measurement
Operational Execution & Accountability
- Oversee delivery of metadata and standards initiatives across one or more small teams
- Define KPIs and quality metrics for metadata completeness, consistency, and effectiveness
- Ensure timely, high-quality execution aligned to business priorities and strategic outcomes
- Manage resources, priorities, and dependencies across initiatives
Requirements
Do you have experience in Stakeholder relationship building?, Do you have a Bachelor's degree?, * Bachelor's degree in Information Science, Library Science, Computer Science, Digital Media, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in metadata management, taxonomy design, content architecture, or digital publishing ecosystems
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing teams or complex cross-functional initiatives
- Demonstrated expertise in: Metadata standards and frameworks (e.g., XML, DITA, RDF, JSON-LD), Taxonomy and ontology design, Content modeling and structured content systems, and Semantic technologies and search optimization
- Experience integrating metadata into CMS, publishing platforms, or learning systems
- Strong understanding of content lifecycle processes, digital publishing, and learning ecosystems (Canvas preferred)
- Familiarity with AI/ML applications in content tagging, classification, and personalization
- Proven ability to solve complex, systemic problems by integrating multiple perspectives
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills in a matrixed organization

In compliance with wage transparency laws in many of the jurisdictions in which we recruit, we provide the following information regarding compensation for this position: Expected salary range: $124,000 - $190,000 per year. All salary ranges are subject to adjustment based on experience, education, and other factors relevant to the position.
