Job description

SMX is seeking an Application Engineer to support the operations, maintenance, modernization, and cloud/container transformation of a mission-critical IRS application environment. This role combines application support, troubleshooting, system engineering, cloud integration, and containerized deployments., * Support production operations, maintenance, and performance monitoring.

  • Troubleshoot application, database, infrastructure, and operational issues.
  • Support releases, upgrades, patching, certificates, and disaster recovery activities.
  • Maintain technical and operational documentation.
  • Support FISMA compliance, vulnerability remediation, audits, and security initiatives.
  • Deploy and support containerized applications using OpenShift and Kubernetes.
  • Assist with AWS and Azure cloud integration efforts.
  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions and support reporting activities.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of application engineering, systems engineering, or enterprise application support experience.
  • Strong experience supporting Java/Spring applications in production environments.
  • Experience with SQL Server, Linux/Red Hat, Windows Server, Splunk, and troubleshooting complex systems.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud and container technologies, including OpenShift, Kubernetes, AWS, or Azure.
  • Experience with technical documentation, release support, and operational continuity.
  • Knowledge of FISMA, NIST, FedRAMP, or similar security frameworks.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • OpenShift and Kubernetes administration experience.
  • AWS and/or Azure cloud integration expertise.
  • Experience with Splunk, Business Objects, Databricks, vulnerability remediation, and audit support.
  • Prior IRS, Treasury, or federal government experience.
