Job description

MediaNews Group is seeking a Lead Cash Application Specialist! This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of cash applications processes for assigned properties (newspapers) owned by the company. This includes, but is not limited to: applying cash manually and through interfaces to A/R accounts from multiple inflows, working error reports from interfaces, performing a three-way match (system, bank, and GL), assisting the collections team with account research, and creating adjustments for customer accounts for numerous reasons.

Please note: This position will be on-site at our office in Willoughby, OH.

What you will do:

  • Demonstrate a full understanding of all cash procedures for assigned workflows and properties
  • Deposit, apply, and reconcile all cash transactions processed on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, including all system balancing
  • Communicate with remote locations and serve as the key contact for sales personnel at field locations
  • Utilize forensic accounting skills through research and critical thought to reconcile variances that may occur between point-of-sale systems, banks, and the general ledger
  • Foster strong relationships with field representatives in advertising, collections, accounting, and property publishers
  • Assist in implementing best practices for A/R activities, reporting, communications, and team development
  • Create an environment and culture that fosters process improvement, high-performance teams, employee growth, and extraordinary customer service
  • Aid in establishing productivity and quality performance measurements, monitoring performance against established goals, and coaching employees on process improvements
  • Process and deposit any live checks for GL items
  • Monitor cash team productivity and performance and report metrics
  • Articulate technical problems to the appropriate IT staff for system functionality issues and resolution, and perform as the "subject matter expert" for DTI, AdBase, Brainworks, interfaces, software upgrades, testing, etc.
  • Bolster communication and teamwork within, and across, other SSC departments
  • Enforce all Cash Application policies, controls, processes, and procedures
  • Train, motivate, and ensure the cash team understands their duties and delegated tasks

Requirements

Do you have experience in Spreadsheets?, Do you have a High school diploma or GED?, * Aptitude for reading and comprehending written instructions (including process, policy, and procedures manuals), correspondence, and financial documents

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver verbal and written communications efficiently and effectively to all levels within the organization
  • Ability to resolve issues independently with coworkers and clients
  • Knowledge of accounting process and controls
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of GAAP
  • Strong analytical skills, self-initiative, good interpersonal skills and team collaboration skills
  • The minimum education required to be considered for this position is a GED or high school diploma; Associate's degree preferred
  • Ability to create Excel spreadsheets using formulas as needed
  • One year of Cash Applications or business experience required; 3 to 5 years preferred, * A full pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process. Must be willing to submit and pass the necessary required checks
