Job description
The CU Boulder Department of Public Safety encourages applications for two Systems Administrator roles. The Systems Administrator is a key member of the University of Colorado Boulder Department of Public Safety (DPS) team, responsible for the administration, support, and maintenance of critical public safety applications, including Genetec, C-CURE, and Axon Fusus, along with their supporting technology infrastructure.
These roles ensure the availability, stability, security, and operational integrity of critically important services through proactive system administration, configuration management, patching, incident response, monitoring, and vendor coordination.
The Systems Administrators will be responsible for the full Genetec server, storage, and database environment, as well as application support. The roles will collaborate with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) for network and data center hosting support and participate in quarterly security reviews with OIT Security. The positions include participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. - Ensure high availability, performance, and security of all public safety applications.
- Troubleshoot application issues, respond to service tickets, and provide Tier 3 support.
- Coordinate with OIT and vendors for network or data center issues affecting applications.
- Implement application upgrades, patches, and configuration changes in collaboration with vendors to minimize service disruption.
- Maintain detailed documentation of application configurations, changes, and operational procedures.
Genetec Server and Storage Administration
- Manage and maintain the full Genetec on-premise environment, including servers, storage, and database.
- Collaborate with Genetec vendor to architect and support backup and disaster recovery solutions.
- Monitor, optimize, and tune system performance to ensure service reliability.
- Serve as primary on-call contact for Genetec infrastructure incidents.
Systems & Infrastructure Coordination
- Partner with OIT networking and data center teams for connectivity, hosting support, and security consultation.
- Raise infrastructure-related incidents to OIT as needed.
- Maintain awareness of infrastructure changes that could impact applications and ensure application readiness.
Vendor & Contract Management
- Manage relationships with application and security vendors, including licensing, contracts, and maintenance agreements.
- Coordinate vendor engagement for troubleshooting, patches, and system updates.
Security, Compliance, & Documentation
- Ensure application and platform configurations follow university cybersecurity and data privacy standards.
- Maintain documentation for compliance, auditing, and operational continuity.
Technology Evaluation & Innovation
- Research emerging public safety technologies and assess potential enhancements for system performance, security, and reliability.
Professional Development & Campus IT Engagement
- Participate in ongoing professional development to maintain expertise in public safety systems, application administration, and IT standard processes.
- Act as DPS liaison to OIT and other campus IT units to support application integration, risk management, and security initiatives.
What You Should Know
Standard business hours M-F, with participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation to support critical public safety applications, including Genetec, C-Cure, and Fusus. Must be willing to respond to incidents promptly and coordinate with OIT and vendors as necessary.
Requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

At least 1 year of experience in:
-
Application support or administration (preferably for security or enterprise systems).

Server, storage, and virtualization administration.
-
System troubleshooting, incident response, and ticket resolution.

Vendor coordination and contract support.

At least 1 year of experience with Genetec, C-CURE, and/or Axon Fusus or similar public safety systems., * Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of team members.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence.

Customer-focused demeanor with a dedication to continuous improvement., * Two or more years of experience with system administration / application support with referenced public safety technologies and systems.

Experience supporting Genetec or similar integrated security platforms.

Familiarity with networking, Windows server administration, databases, and virtualization as they relate to application support.

ITIL4 or equivalent IT service management certification.

Experience in public safety, campus security, or enterprise security technology environments.

Knowledge of backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability planning.
