Job description

Understanding Needed Integration (UNI) is seeking a motivated and innovative IT Specialist to support the organization's technology infrastructure while leading the development and ongoing management of our proprietary platform, UNI Train.

UNI is committed to empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, individuals who are judicially involved, and those with enhanced behavioral needs through person-centered supports, employment services, behavioral and mental health supports, and community integration opportunities.

The IT Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring reliable technology operations across the organization while designing, implementing, and maintaining UNI Train-a digital platform that will serve as both a staff training hub and a client-focused communication and social engagement tool. This position requires a combination of technical support expertise, software development knowledge, project management skills, and a commitment to creating accessible technology solutions that support our mission.

This role combines hands-on technical support with the opportunity to build and grow a transformative platform that directly impacts the lives of the people we serve., UNI Train Platform Development & Management (Primary Duties)

  • Lead the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the UNI Train platform.
  • Collaborate with leadership, staff, and stakeholders to identify platform requirements and user needs.
  • Develop features that allow staff to access training materials, certifications, policy documents, and professional development resources.
  • Create client-facing communication and social engagement tools that promote connection, inclusion, and participation.
  • Ensure the platform meets accessibility standards and accommodates diverse user needs.
  • Develop user authentication, security protocols, and data privacy safeguards.
  • Monitor platform performance, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement enhancements.
  • Create reports and analytics to measure platform engagement and training outcomes.
  • Provide training and technical support to staff and platform users.
  • Maintain documentation related to platform architecture, workflows, and updates.

IT Support & Systems Administration

  • Provide day-to-day technical support for staff across all departments.
  • Assist families and UNI staff members to access the UNI Train platform
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, network, printer, email, and mobile device issues.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade computer systems and peripherals.
  • Assist with management of user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify potential issues.
  • Maintain organizational cybersecurity protocols, including antivirus protection, system updates, and security awareness practices.
  • Assist with data backup, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity efforts.
  • Document IT processes, troubleshooting procedures, and technical standards.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors and service providers as needed.
  • Build simple user guides and train administrative staff on how to access, update, manage, and troubleshoot the new digital system
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Lead Digitization Efforts & Maintain Security Compliance

§ Convert physical or static PDF forms, intake documents, and surveys into secure, interactive, and responsive digital formats.

§ Implement access controls, data encryption, and privacy standards to protect sensitive participant data (e.g., ensuring HIPAA, FERPA, or local county compliance).

§ User Experience (UX) Design: Optimize digital form logic (such as conditional logic and skip-patterns) to make forms intuitive and easy to fill out on mobile devices and tablets.

§ Create automated data collection pipelines that format submitted information into structured, searchable databases or dashboards for easy analysis.

Strategic Technology Initiatives

  • Recommend technology improvements that increase organizational efficiency and service quality.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and software solutions relevant to UNI's operations.
  • Participate in technology planning and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Support integration between UNI Train and other organizational systems where applicable.
  • Assist with budgeting and planning for future technology investments.

Requirements

  • Microsoft 365 Administration
  • Active Directory and user management
  • Windows operating systems
  • Basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, Wi-Fi)
  • Endpoint management and device troubleshooting
  • Cybersecurity best practices
  • Cloud-based systems and services
  • Backup and recovery solutions

Software Development

  • HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript
  • Modern web development frameworks (React, Angular, or Vue.js preferred)
  • Backend development technologies such as Node.js, .NET, Python, or PHP
  • Database management (SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or similar)
  • API integration and development
  • Mobile-responsive application development
  • Version control systems such as Git and GitHub
  • Software testing and debugging methodologies

Platform & Collaboration Tools

  • Google Workspace
  • Power Automate
  • Learning Management Systems (LMS)
  • Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Project management tools such as Jira, Trello, and Asana, * Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Development, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in IT support, systems administration, software development, or a related technical role.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and supporting web-based applications strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare, behavioral health, human services, nonprofit organizations, or social service environments is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with communication tools such as VoIP, teleconferencing, and messaging applications.
  • IT certifications
  • Strong knowledge of hardware troubleshooting (computers, printers, networking devices, etc.).
  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and data protection in non-profit environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Experience designing accessible applications compliant with ADA and WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Knowledge of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design principles.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, privacy regulations, and data security standards.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Relevant industry certifications such as:
  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Network+
  • CompTIA Security+
  • Microsoft Certified Fundamentals
  • Azure Fundamentals
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) (preferred but not required)
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, CCNA, etc. are a plus
