Job description

At the University of Portsmouth London Campus, technology sits behind almost everything that helps students learn and staff teach. We are looking for a Digital Learning and IT Support Officer to keep that environment running smoothly, from Moodle and classroom systems to the everyday support that staff and students rely on. If you enjoy solving problems, making technology feel simple and seeing the difference your work makes, this is a role where you will see it every day., This is a hands-on, varied role that brings together digital learning support, Moodle administration, classroom technology, digital services and user support. You will work closely with academic staff, professional services colleagues, students and central University departments, helping our digital learning environment operate effectively day to day.

You will play a key part in maintaining and developing our Moodle-based learning environment, supporting colleagues in their use of learning technologies, managing digital service requests through Hornbill, and keeping campus technology and digital systems running reliably., Support academics to make effective use of the Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle, and a range of digital learning tools. This will include creating, maintaining and rolling over Moodle module sites and templates, ensuring accurate metadata and well-organised content.

You will help colleagues to upload, structure and manage learning materials, while providing practical guidance and training on tools including Panopto, Microsoft Teams, Vevox, Mentimeter, Padlet, Office 365 and H5P.

The role will also involve developing user guides, FAQs and training resources, delivering workshops and one-to-one support sessions, documenting procedures in line with change control requirements, and assisting with Microsoft 365 and SharePoint site administration.

Teaching room technology and audio-visual support

Support the effective operation of teaching room technology, including presentation equipment, audio-visual systems and lecture capture. This will include helping to set up and test technology for teaching sessions, presentations and events, ensuring equipment is ready for use and supporting a smooth teaching and learning experience.

You will also maintain inventories of digital equipment and support the management of loan devices where applicable.

Systems administration support and reporting

Support user access and permissions within approved systems, helping to ensure colleagues and students have appropriate access to the digital platforms they need.

You will assist with data collection, reporting and analytics relating to student engagement and digital learning, including analysing VLE usage data to inform platform improvements and identify training needs.

The role will also contribute to the continuous improvement of digital services and help ensure compliance with University IT policies, GDPR and accessibility standards.

Student and staff IT support

Act as a first point of contact for digital learning and technology enquiries, providing responsive support to students and staff.

You will manage and respond to service requests and incidents through the Hornbill Enterprise Service Management system, monitor shared support mailboxes to ensure enquiries are triaged and resolved promptly, and liaise with central support teams, including CADI and Information Services, where specialist support is required.

Service improvement and collaboration

Identify opportunities to improve digital learning and support services, contributing to digital transformation and student experience projects.

You will promote good practice in the use of educational technologies, stay up to date with emerging tools, including AI-driven support applications, and work with academic departments to align digital learning with curriculum goals.

The role will also support inclusive and accessible practice, including promoting compliance with WCAG standards., * Supporting users in a digital learning or technology environment.

  • Using or administering Moodle or another Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
  • Providing technical support to staff and students.
  • Producing user guidance and delivering training.
  • Using service desk or ticket management systems.
  • Microsoft 365 and SharePoint site administration

Requirements

Do you have experience in Teaching?, * Good understanding of Moodle and online learning environments.

  • Good understanding of Microsoft 365 applications, including Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
  • Strong customer service orientation and a commitment to an excellent student experience.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • A willingness to develop and learn new technology and skills.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience within higher education.
  • Experience with Panopto, Vevox, Mentimeter, Padlet or H5P.
  • Experience using Hornbill or similar Enterprise Service Management platforms.
  • Experience supporting audio-visual or classroom technologies.
  • Experience working with student information systems and learning analytics.
  • Experience in an educational or campus setting is a plus

Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent professional experience in Education Technology, IT, Digital Services, Learning Technology, Computer Science or a related field.

Working environment

  • On-site work is required.
  • Rotational shifts, including evenings or weekends for major events, may be required.
  • Ability to safely move, set up and transport IT and audio-visual equipment
  • Given the lively nature of the London campus, there will be opportunities to contribute to wider campus enrichment activities and operations.
