Job description

  • Manage the full lifecycle of the AVEVA PI Data Historian System, including architecture, development, installation, commissioning, maintenance, upgrades, and decommissioning activities.

  • Support greenfield and brownfield manufacturing site projects, including deployment of PI infrastructure for new production facilities and expansion projects.

  • Lead PI System implementation activities during new manufacturing site start-up phases, including system design, validation, commissioning, and operational readiness.

  • Administer a 24/7 operational PI System, ensuring high availability, reliability, performance, and disaster recovery readiness.

  • Design, implement, and optimize historian solutions integrating OT equipment, PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES, and enterprise IT systems.

  • Drive end-to-end IT/OT integration activities to enable seamless data flow between manufacturing equipment, automation systems, and business applications.

  • Collaborate closely with automation, infrastructure, cybersecurity, manufacturing, and digitalization teams to ensure compliant and scalable system integration.

  • Lead change, incident, and problem management processes in collaboration with IT/OT teams, cross-functional stakeholders, vendors, and end users. Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to industrial data collection, communication interfaces, data storage, synchronization, and retrieval.

  • Translate business and operational requirements into robust technical solutions aligned with manufacturing and digital transformation strategies. Design and configure complex PI tags, AF structures, event frames, and data models tailored to operational and business needs.

  • Develop and maintain custom interfaces, connectors, and scripts to enhance interoperability between OT equipment and enterprise IT platforms.

  • Support commissioning and qualification activities for connected manufacturing systems and ensure compliance with GMP and validation requirements.

  • Conduct system performance analysis and drive continuous improvement initiatives for historian and integration platforms.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and project team members.

  • Collaborate with external vendors, system integrators, and engineering partners during project execution and operational support activities.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive GMP-compliant documentation, including design specifications, test protocols, validation records, SOPs, and lifecycle documents.

  • Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) during audits, inspections, and assessments, ensuring compliance with internal standards, regulatory requirements, and data integrity principles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 4 - 6 years of hands-on experience in PI Historian engineering, system integration, and technical project delivery within pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
  • Proven hands-on experience with the AVEVA PI Data Historian System, including PI Server, PI AF, PI Vision, Interfaces, Connectors & Adaptors.
  • Strong project experience supporting new manufacturing site deployments, commissioning activities, or large-scale production expansion projects.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating OT equipment and industrial automation systems with enterprise IT infrastructure and applications.
  • Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols such as OPC DA/UA, modbus, MQTT, BACnet, or Ethernet/IP.
  • Strong background in managing and administering production-critical applications in regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience working with PLCs, SCADA, DCS, MES, manufacturing execution & integration platform architectures.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure technologies including Windows Server, virtualization, networking, Active Directory, backup/recovery, and cybersecurity principles.
  • Experience with Computerized System Validation (CSV), GMP compliance, and data integrity requirements within regulated industries.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to work across IT and OT domains.
  • In-depth knowledge of industrial data integration, historian system architecture, and real-time data management.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, automation systems, and digital manufacturing initiatives.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for system administration and workflow automation.
  • Experience with data contextualization, visualization, reporting, and analytics platforms.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional and global project environments.
  • Fluent in English; German language skills are highly desirable
