Job description

We're recruiting on behalf of a well-established product-development business for a hands-on engineering role sitting within an R&D team, with genuine breadth across the full electronics development lifecycle.

You won't be doing just one thing here. The role spans schematic design and PCB layout through to embedded firmware, production test rig development, ERP bill of materials management, and regulatory compliance work (Safety/EMC). If you enjoy variety and want to see your work go all the way from concept to production-ready product, this is worth a serious look.

What You'll Be Working On

The role covers several distinct areas, and you'll be expected to contribute meaningfully across all of them:

Embedded Electronics Design

  • Full lifecycle hardware development: component selection, schematic design, PCB layout, and prototype testing
  • Embedded C/C++ firmware development for PIC or NXP microcontrollers (this is a real requirement, not a nice-to-have)
  • Ability to pick up and understand existing deployed firmware and deliver bug fixes with low risk to live systems

Production & Test

  • Design and implementation of production test solutions, including firmware/software and physical test rigs
  • Functional design proving for both hardware and firmware
  • Supporting production and second-line support teams with technical queries

Documentation & Compliance

  • Writing detailed design specifications from minimal source material, capturing requirements at every project stage
  • Active involvement in Safety and EMC compliance activities, product testing, and certification
  • BOM data management for new and existing products within the ERP system

Collaboration & Mentoring

  • Working across the R&D team and liaising directly with suppliers
  • Coordinating handover to production teams
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to more junior engineers, This role is listed as mid-level, but the scope is broad. You'll be expected to work largely autonomously on routine work and take general direction on new assignments rather than being closely supervised. The expectation is that you bring genuine engineering judgement, not just execution.

The combination of hardware, firmware, compliance, and ERP involvement makes this a genuinely varied position. If you've spent your career in a narrow specialism and want more breadth, or you've been doing all of this already and want to do it somewhere with a mature R&D function, it's a strong fit either way.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Schematics?, Essential:

  • Experiencein a product development environment (not just a support or maintenance role)
  • Hands-on embedded firmware experience in C/C++ for PIC or NXP microcontrollers
  • End-to-end PCB design experience: schematic through to layout
  • Working knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements (Safety/EMC)
  • Comfortable with ERP systems and BOM management
  • Strong documentation skills: able to produce clear technical specifications from scratch

Preferred:

  • Experience of formal project management
  • Previous involvement in production test solution design
