Job description

As a Senior Network Systems Specialist, you'll lead network operations, optimize enterprise platforms, and drive innovative solutions that keep our city connected and secure.   • Lead technical evaluations for hardware, software, and network service requests
  • Establish, monitor, and maintain integrated data networks across City systems
  • Guide departments in assessing operational technology needs and developing requirements
  • Recommend optimized configurations for networks, systems, and enterprise platforms
  • Provide advanced technical support for the maintenance and repair of enterprise systems
  • Install, troubleshoot, and diagnose complex enterprise technology platforms
  • Propose hardware, software, and service enhancements to improve performance
  • Coordinate with vendors to obtain accurate cost estimates and solution options
  • Monitor project schedules and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks
  • Prepare comprehensive records, reports, correspondence and other written materials
  • Foster strong working relationships through clear communication and effective collaboration

Explore the job specification for additional position details. The current vacancies exist in the Information Services Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months., Application Review - Qualifying Only: Applications submitted will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates may be invited to the Oral Examination. The selection will be based upon those applications which demonstrate the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation. Oral Exam - 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related Oral Examination which may evaluate a candidate's knowledge and abilities in the following areas: SAN/NAS technologies, VMware operations, Windows Server operations, Network management principles, interpersonal relations and/or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience, and qualifications for the position of Senior Network Systems Specialist. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list. The Oral Examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 13th, 2026. Veteran's Preference If an examination is conducted for a position within the classified service, qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score. Candidates must submit a copy of their DD214 Member 4 form or electronic copy indicating honorable discharge with each application prior to the filing deadline.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list. OPTION 1: Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that gained as a Network Systems Specialist with the City of Fresno OPTION 2: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in management information systems, computer sciences or related field AND Three (3) years of full-time paid work experience, which includes implementation of network or automated system applications and equipment, and project management. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Preferred Qualifications Desirable experience includes working with enterprise - grade voice communication systems; advanced network switching such as software - defined networking and wireless technologies; enterprise firewalls; and managing fiber optic networks with the ability to interpret fiber infrastructure schematics. Additional desirable experience includes administering Windows and Linux servers, supporting multi - site networks, producing strong documentation, troubleshooting complex issues, contributing to transformational projects, and working in large organizations as a subject matter expert. Desirable certifications include Microsoft MSCE; Cisco CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE; CompTIA Network+ or Security+; PMI CAPM or PMP; and Axelos ITIL. Additional Requirements Eligibles considered for hire will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint and Fresno Police Department background check prior to employment with the City of Fresno. Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record. Depending on specific assignment, a license and/or certificate may be required at time of application.

PAY: $100 per month HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA) Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security. DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years.
