Job description
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable Back End services using Java (Spring Boot) and/or Node.js
- Deliver solutions in line with government digital standards and secure coding practices
- Collaborate with architects, product owners, and multi-disciplinary teams
- Build and integrate APIs (RESTful/microservices architecture)
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code following best practices
- Participate in code reviews, agile ceremonies, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across environments
- Ensure solutions meet security, accessibility, and compliance requirements typical of public sector projects
Requirements
- Strong experience with either:
- Java (Spring Boot/Spring ecosystem), or
- Node.js (Express, NestJS or similar frameworks)
- Proven experience building microservices-based architectures
- Experience working on UK Government/Public Sector projects (essential)
- Familiarity with GDS (Government Digital Service) standards and service assessments
- Strong experience with REST API design and integration
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), ideally in secure environments
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
- Experience with containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes preferred)
- Strong understanding of Git version control
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery teams
- Strong awareness of security, compliance, and accessibility standards (eg, WCAG)
Desirable Skills
- Experience with both Java and Node.js
- Knowledge of event-driven architecture (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.)
- Previous work on high-security or regulated government programmes
- Exposure to Identity & Access Management solutions (eg, OAuth, SSO)
- Front End experience (React, Angular)
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM)
- Active or previous UK Government security clearance (eg, SC Cleared)
Working Arrangement
- Remote-first with occasional travel to client site
- Must be able to work within UK business hours
- Candidates must be eligible to work on UK government projects
