Job description
The Section Manager reports to the Software Systems/System Development Department Manager and is responsible for first-line management of a group of 8-10 software engineers who have varying levels of experience and multi-domain expertise and support various contracts across all company business divisions.
The successful candidate will manage engineers who are involved with development of deliverable software/systems/products over the entire engineering development lifecycle. Although the section staff will typically work on independent projects, the Section Manager will foster collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas and new technologies within the group. They will also contribute directly to engineering development as a task leader, technical leader, or individual contributor. The Section Manager position responsibilities will occupy ~15% of time performing first-line management of the section staff and ~85% of time directly performing technical development activities.
What You Will Do:
As a Section Manager, you will:

Plan and track staff's task assignments

Support staff with career development planning
-
Prepare and communicate staff performance evaluations

Assist with strengthening staff core engineering skills and discipline, and developing staff domain knowledge and expertise

Assist in planning for and addressing engineering staffing needs

Assist and support recruiting and interviewing activities

Assist with ensuring staff compliance with company policies/procedures
As a technical contributor, you will:

Participate in the requirements, design, development and testing of software to include development of new work products or enhancement of existing applications and systems

Design, code, test, integrate, and document software solutions

Participate in internal review of software components and systems

Collaborate with project managers and other professionals within Engineering

Follow established development practices and processes to maintain the configuration management of software products

Participate in the advancement of the software development environment and DevOps practices within Engineering
Requirements
-
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant prior experienceMinimum of 8 years experience developing in modern programming languages (e.g. C++, Java) in a Linux environment

Minimum of 4 years experience as a software engineering section/front-line manager and/or engineering team leader

Software/system/product development experience in one of these areas: telecommunications, data communications, wireless communications, communications protocols, networking protocols, and/or digital signal processing.

Strong emotional intelligence skills (i.e. self-awareness, self-management, empathy, social awareness, relationship management)

Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Top Secret SCI (TS/SCI) security clearance with polygraph is required after start.

U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Prefer:

Excellent track record for working effectively and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment

Experience with microservices architecture, distributed systems, containerized deployments, and modern cloud technologies

Experience with RESTful APIs, messaging queue technologies (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc), and/or event-driven systems

Experience with embedded software development and software/hardware integration.

Strong knowledge of engineering planning & project management systems, and cost & schedule tracking systems

Experience working in the Defense industry, the Intelligence Community, or with other U.S. Government agencies

Experience in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including Agile methods and/or DevOps/DevSecOps

Ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers at multiple levels

Coaching, teaching and/or mentoring skills
-
Active and transferable U.S. government issued Top Secret SCI (TS/SCI) security clearance with Poly

The salary range for this role is 118,300 USD - 224,900 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company's performance.
This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
