Job description

What you'll do... About the Team Walmart Marketplace is one of the fastest-growing eCommerce platforms, enabling third-party sellers to reach millions of customers. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in building scalable, high-performance systems that power seller onboarding, catalog, payments, compliance, and marketplace operations. This role requires strong hands-on engineering, system design expertise, and cross-team technical leadership.

About Team:

Our team works closely with our US stores and eCommerce business to better serve customers by empowering team members, stores, and merchants with technological innovation. From groceries and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. offers an extensive selection that our customers value, whether they shop online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps, or in-store. Focus areas include customers, stores and employees, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science, and search and personalization.

What you'll do:

  • Lead design and development of scalable distributed systems serving millions of sellers and customers.
  • Build full-stack solutions using:

Backend: Java (Spring Boot), REST/gRPC APIs + Frontend: React (modern hooks-based architecture) + Data: Cassandra (NoSQL), relational DBs where applicable + Streaming: Kafka for event-driven architecture

  • Design event-driven, asynchronous systems using Kafka.
  • Architect highly available, fault-tolerant systems with strong observability.
  • Improve performance, reliability, and scalability of Marketplace services.
  • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers.
  • Drive technical roadmap and long-term architecture decisions.
  • Collaborate with Product, Data, Payments, Risk, and Infrastructure teams.
  • Lead production readiness, incident resolution, and postmortems.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong expertise in Java (concurrency, multithreading, JVM internals).
  • Deep experience building microservices using Spring Boot.
  • Strong React experience (state management, performance optimization, component design).
  • Hands-on experience with:

Cassandra (data modeling, partition strategies, performance tuning) + Kafka (producers, consumers, schema evolution, scaling)

  • Experience designing distributed systems at scale.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • CAP theorem
  • Event-driven systems
  • Idempotency & eventual consistency
  • API versioning
  • Caching strategies
  • Experience with CI/CD and cloud-native systems (Kubernetes preferred).

Leadership Expectations (Staff Level)

  • Own architecture across multiple services.
  • Influence engineering standards.
  • Drive cross-team initiatives.
  • Identify scalability bottlenecks before they occur.
  • Act as a technical multiplier for the team.

Nice to Have

  • Marketplace / eCommerce domain experience.
  • Experience with payment systems or seller platforms.
  • Experience handling high QPS systems.
  • Experience migrating monolith - microservices.
  • Knowledge of GraphQL.
  • Exposure to distributed tracing and observability tools.
