Job description

  • Work independently to support Project Managers, Project Engineers and Designers with technical design tasks for various projects.
  • Utilize engineering and drafting software to complete assignments, such as generating plan and profile drawings to include cross-sections, underground utilities, etc. from survey files and/or record drawings.
  • Complete redline markups and accurately incorporates review comments with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare intermediate manual or computer-aided design drawings, cost estimates, bills of materials, plus required documents and reports for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Interpret survey notes, utility records, and civil plans to create accurate base drawings.
  • Perform standard calculations, including elevations, grades, utility dimensions, and material quantities.
  • Support collection of field data or utility record information when required.

  • Work with internal clients daily, problem solve minor issues and escalate concerns when needed.
  • Apply the client's standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, and procedures and/or appropriate industry standards in preparing layouts.
  1. Technical //
  • Conduct site surveys, walk-outs, and field verifications to capture accurate route, pole, structure, and right-of-way conditions.
  • Collect field data including measurements, GPS coordinates, photos, pole loading conditions, existing utility attachments, and make-ready requirements.
  • Identify field constraints-obstructions, conflicts, access limitations, and environmental considerations-that affect constructability and route selection.
  • Verify existing infrastructure (conduit, handholes, vaults, pedestals, aerial strand) against records and flag discrepancies.
  • Provide on-site design support and clarification to construction and splicing crews during project implementation.
  • Perform field redlines and capture as-built conditions for incorporation into final design documentation.
  • Develop detailed outside plant designs using GIS, CAD, and asset management tools (e.g., 3-GIS, OSPI/IQGeo, VETRO FiberMap, AutoCAD, MicroStation).
  • Translate field-collected data into accurate, constructable construction drawings, route maps, and permit exhibits.
  • Incorporate network topology considerations such as feeder/distribution segmentation, splitter hierarchy, fiber counts, and redundancy into the physical design.
  • Design-to-build conformance: Compare as-built field conditions against the approved design to confirm routes, structures, fiber counts, and hardware placement were built as engineered.
  • Splice and connectivity verification: Validate splice points, splice enclosures, fiber assignments, and port/splitter connectivity against the design and splice schematics.
  • Continuity and integrity checks: Coordinate with or review results from OTDR traces, power meter readings, and continuity testing to confirm fiber integrity, acceptable loss budgets, and end-to-end connectivity.
  • Documentation reconciliation: Reconcile field redlines, test results, and as-built data; update GIS and design records so the documented network reflects the physical build.
  • Discrepancy resolution: Identify, document, and track build deviations or defects; coordinate corrective action with construction and splicing crews and confirm resolution.
  • Closeout support: Compile verified as-built packages, test documentation, and conformance records for client acceptance and project handoff.

PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS + ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Work is carried out in both a professional office and various outdoor environments.

  • Seated and Standing Position. Extended periods of sitting and standing in an upright position at a workstation or job site.
  • Mobility. Movement within the office and job sites, including navigating between floors, workstations, high-traffic areas, and various walking surfaces.
  • Head and Neck Movement. Forward flexion, extension, or lateral rotation of the head and neck while using multiple computer screens.
  • Repetitive Motion. Repetitive finger movements for operating a computer mouse and typing on a keyboard. Includes activities such as reaching, bending, stooping, carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling, and handling.
  • Arm Movement. Extending hands and arms in various directions, such as overhead, below the waist, forward, or laterally.
  • Object Handling. Raising or lowering objects from one level to another and transporting objects by holding them in the hands, arms, or over the shoulder.
  • Cognitive Requirements. Ability to move effectively in and around construction sites, traffic work zones, and other outdoor assignments.
  • Safety and Equipment Use. Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, along with use of hand and power tools.
  • Driving and Vehicle Use. May involve driving large pick-up trucks with attached trailers, potentially operating watercraft, and for extended periods of time.

EXPECTED WORK HOURS

  • This is a full-time position, generally 40 hours per week, however, hours may fluctuate depending on department needs including the use of overtime.
  • CobbFendley's standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM CST. Generally, employees receive a 1-hour unpaid lunch break free of duty. Please note, operating hours and lunch hours may differ based on project workload, primarily for field staff.

Requirements

Intermediate // General understanding and practical experience; capable of working independently with growing efficiency. 5+ years of professional experience with creating plan and profile drawings.

  • Knowledge of standard drafting techniques, technical standards, and established procedures used to support the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects
  • Skills in using industry-standard engineering and drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, etc.) to prepare technical drawings, document work, and communicate project information effectively.
  • Ability to use spreadsheets, word processing, and standard office software to compile data, support technical documentation, and assist with reporting and recordkeeping.
