Job description

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join a small, experienced engineering team. This is a hands-on IC role. Your typical week will include writing code (and tests), reviewing others' code and helping them make it better, improving our review processes and tooling, and building the APIs and business logic that power our telehealth platform.

We use Django and Django REST Framework to provide foundational APIs and business logic, and React and Next.js on the client side. You'll primarily work on the backend, but we're looking for engineers who are comfortable working across the full stack as the lines between frontend and backend continue to blur; especially as AI coding tools make it increasingly practical to contribute outside your core specialty.

AI powered developer workflows mean there's a lot of code to review. We need engineers who can help out; not just by reviewing more code, but by raising the quality bar so there's less to catch, and by improving the processes and tooling we use to review. You'll work with significant autonomy while collaborating closely with a tight-knit team that includes our Principal Engineer, Chief Architect, Senior Engineering Manager, and Technical Project Manager., * Remote. The entire team is remote. We work across time zones with core collaboration hours of 9am-3pm Pacific. The remainder of the full workday can sit before and/or after, depending on time zone and circumstance.

  • Mission-driven pace. We work hard because the work matters. We don't stop when the ticket is done; we help each other, rally around production issues, and look for ways to improve both ourselves and the platform. We're a small team building something important and there's always more to do.
  • AI-forward. We actively use and explore AI coding and code review tools. We've invested in making this work within HIPAA constraints, so you'll have real, compliant access to tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex.
  • Autonomy with direction. You'll have significant independence in how you approach your work, collaborating closely with experienced teammates across engineering, product, and project management.

Our Hiring Process We respect your time. The entire process takes two to three weeks, involves four to five touchpoints, and asks for no more than six hours of your time total.

  1. Application review. We read applications ourselves; no AI resume screening. We're looking for evidence of real experience, not keyword matches.

  2. Introductory call (30 min). A conversation with our Senior Engineering Manager. We'll talk about the role, the team, and your background. This is as much for you to evaluate us as the other way around. Come with questions.

  3. Take-home project. We'll provide you with a set of requirements, and ask you to create a Python/Django/DRF project and push it to a GitHub repo for us to review once completed.

  4. Technical conversation (60 min). A deeper discussion with members of our engineering team about your experience, how you approach problems, and how you think about architecture and code quality. We'll talk through your take home project, real scenarios relevant to our stack, and the challenges we're solving. No gotcha questions, no whiteboard algorithms.

  5. Live coding session (60 min). A practical, pair-programming-style session adding a feature to your take-home project. You're welcome to use the AI coding tools you'd use on the job - we want to see how you actually work, including how you use AI, when you don't, and how you evaluate what it produces. We'll also include a code review exercise where you review a pull request and walk us through your feedback.

  6. Final conversation (30 min). A call with our VP of Engineering to talk about the mission, team culture, and your questions about Healthvana. If there are things that matter to you about where you work, how decisions get made, what the pace feels like, where the company is headed, this is the place to ask.

We aim to have an offer decision within a few business days of the final conversation.

Requirements

Do you have experience in Web applications?, * 5+ years building and running production web applications. You've shipped real things to real users and kept them running.

  • Strong Python experience, preferably with 3.8+. Django and Django REST Framework experience is strongly preferred, but deep experience with similar frameworks counts.
  • Comfort working across the stack. You're backend-first, but you're not the kind of engineer who stops at the API boundary. Familiarity with JavaScript, React, or Next.js is a plus; willingness to work in them is a requirement.
  • AI fluency. You have used AI tools, and have opinions about when they work and why they don't. You actively use, or are eager to adopt, AI coding tools in your workflow. You can review AI-generated code critically and know that "it works" isn't the same as "it's correct." We've done the work to set up HIPAA-compliant AI coding workflows with tools like Claude Code and VS Code with Anthropic and OpenAI integrations, and we want engineers who will make the most of them.
  • Strong code review instincts. You write clear, constructive feedback. You catch real problems without nitpicking style. You understand that code review is as much about raising the team's standards as it is about catching bugs.
  • Clear communication. You're able to work compassionately and effectively via Slack and video with teammates of diverse backgrounds and varying experience levels. You know when to ask for help.
  • Comfort with healthcare subject matter. Our platform deals directly with sexual health, HIV prevention, and STI care. You should be comfortable with frank medical discussions and motivated by the impact this work has on patients, especially those in underserved populations.
  • Mission alignment. We're a small team doing work that matters. We're looking for people who honestly want to help end HIV and are passionate about healthcare.

Bonus points

  • Experience working with PHI in a HIPAA-compliant environment
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems or healthcare integrations (HL7, FHIR)
  • A solid understanding of automated testing, you believe a feature isn't done until the tests are written
  • You've worked on telehealth platforms or patient-facing healthcare applications, * Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship at this time.
  • Must be available to work weekdays during core business hours of 9am-3pm Pacific Time.

About the company

Our team cares deeply about helping patients, and we're looking for someone invigorated by that too. Since 2015, Healthvana has helped millions of people, and our work has been featured at the White House (where we presented our AI work), on Capitol Hill, and at Stanford University, published in medical journals, and covered in media ranging from the NY Times to Fox News. We're on a mission to help end HIV, and we're a leader in doing so in the United States. Our platform helps patients engage in their healthcare either via partner healthcare providers in-person or via telehealth. Through our telehealth One-for-One program, every new insured patient means we help an uninsured person get access to free care. We launched this less than a year ago and are already helping patients in 50 states! Our care ecosystem spans digital patient intake, a patient portal, a provider portal, telehealth communications, prescription ordering and management, and more - and we use AI tools throughout our care delivery, from conversational AI that helps patients stay on track to the coding tools our engineering team uses every day. We don't care about where you worked before or where you went to school. We care about the quality of your work, your ability to learn fast, being a great colleague, and your desire to have your efforts really impact lives., Healthvana is an equal opportunity employer. We believe the strongest teams bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives to the work.
