Job description

The Systems Administrator provides mid-level systems and equipment installation, administration, configuration, implementation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and validation support for enterprise IT infrastructure. The role supports physical and virtual server environments, Microsoft server technologies, storage and backup platforms, system imaging, remote administration tools, SQL Server administration tools, and routine operational checklists and documentation., * Install, administer, configure, implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and validate systems, equipment, and infrastructure components in accordance with assigned requirements and procedures.

  • Create, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot virtual machines, preferably using Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Manage, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Microsoft Failover Clusters.
  • Support a variety of mass storage arrays and RAID configurations.
  • Use Microsoft PowerShell to automate tedious, repetitive, or error-prone tasks related to the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and management of IT systems and services.
  • Install physical servers into racks and load, configure, and validate Windows operating systems on server hardware.
  • Use Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) boot methods and Windows Deployment Services to load server images.
  • Replace and install server and workstation hardware components, including RAM, hard drives, network cards, and storage cards.
  • Perform basic network troubleshooting, including identification and resolution support for IP conflicts, DNS resolution problems, and switch port status issues.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing on-site technologies and consider emerging technologies that may improve operations, performance, reliability, or maintainability.
  • Add, configure, and manage Microsoft Server roles and features, including File and Storage Services, Print and Document Services, and Remote Desktop Services.
  • Troubleshoot Windows Server Update Services issues, including use of System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) utilities where appropriate.
  • Manage tape backup servers, tape backup libraries, and tape workstations used to archive user data and perform system backups.
  • Maintain the inventory of blank tapes and manage backup operations, including identifying, correcting, and documenting abnormal or unexpected conditions involving backup and replication platforms such as Arcserve or similar tools.
  • Configure and monitor systems and servers using Windows Admin Center.
  • Configure and monitor systems and servers using Remote Server Administration Tools, including Active Directory Users and Computers, Remote Desktop, Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager, and Windows Deployment Services.
  • Configure and monitor SQL Servers using SQL Server management tools.
  • Recognize failed hardware - including hard drives, power supplies, individual components, and entire servers - and follow detailed instructions to identify, troubleshoot, remove, replace, and validate faulty equipment.
  • Complete and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly checklists, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs), and additional documents or reports as assigned., The candidate shall be able to add, configure, and manage roles and features on current Microsoft Server versions, including but not limited to:
  • File and Storage Services
  • Print and Document Services
  • Remote Desktop Services

Remote Server Administration Tools

The candidate shall be able to configure and monitor systems and servers using a variety of Remote Server Administration Tools, including but not limited to:

  • Active Directory Users and Computers
  • Remote Desktop
  • Hyper-V Manager
  • Failover Cluster Manager
  • Windows Deployment Services

Requirements

The successful candidate will be hands-on, technically capable, and detail-oriented - able to follow established procedures while identifying opportunities to improve system reliability, administrative efficiency, and operational effectiveness., * Relevant work experience in systems and equipment installation, administration, configuration, implementation, maintenance, and validation of installed components.

  • Hands-on experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server environments and current Microsoft Server roles and features.
  • Experience with virtualization administration, preferably Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Experience managing or troubleshooting Microsoft Failover Clusters.
  • Experience supporting mass storage arrays and RAID configurations.
  • Ability to use Microsoft PowerShell to automate administrative, configuration, troubleshooting, and management tasks.
  • Experience installing, imaging, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting physical servers.
  • Experience using PXE boot and Windows Deployment Services for server imaging or deployment activities.
  • Ability to replace or install common hardware components such as RAM, hard drives, network cards, and storage cards.
  • Ability to perform basic network troubleshooting related to IP addressing, DNS resolution, and switch port status.
  • Experience with Windows Server Update Services troubleshooting and use of SFC and DISM utilities.
  • Experience administering or supporting backup environments, including tape backup servers, tape libraries, tape workstations, backup media inventory, and abnormal backup condition resolution.
  • Experience using Windows Admin Center and Remote Server Administration Tools for system monitoring and administration.
  • Experience using SQL Server management tools to configure and monitor SQL Servers.
  • Ability to recognize failed hardware and follow detailed procedures to troubleshoot and replace faulty equipment.
  • Ability to maintain operational checklists, SOPs, guidelines, technical documentation, and assigned reports., * Four-year college degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, plus four (4) years of Systems Administrator-relevant experience at any level.
  • Candidates with a two-year degree, or a four-year degree in a different field, require eight (8) years of relevant Systems Administrator experience.
  • If experience is being used in lieu of education, all qualifying experience must be at or above the position level described in this position description.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating in structured enterprise or mission-critical IT environments.
  • Experience supporting Windows Server, Hyper-V, failover clustering, storage, backup, and deployment services in production environments.
  • Experience documenting technical actions, maintaining recurring operational checklists, and following established SOPs or technical guides.
  • Experience identifying process improvements that improve reliability, repeatability, and administrative efficiency.
