Job description
The primary purpose of this position is to provide advanced lead technical (technical expert) support in the development, installation, modification, and maintenance of specialized and complex computer systems software, communications software, various layered products, and third-party software. This position may be responsible for providing critical or 24x7x365 support for mission-critical IT systems located in Wake County and Forest City, NC. Work involves monitoring and fine-tuning operating systems software, resolving technically complex problems, and managing projects for new releases and versions of software. Support consists of providing extensive server operating system and Active Directory technical knowledge to application developers, application designers, support staff, and management. Work involves assisting analysts, programmers and users on complex applications for providing compatibility and analysis of software constraints with existing operating systems software and for providing systems software design, modification and tailoring as required. Provides cost/benefit evaluations of vendor supplied software and recommends hardware configurations as needed. Work involves monitoring CPU cycles, storage utilization, Input/Output utilization, and disk space utilization. Addresses the root cause of problems rather than providing temporary repairs. While so doing, also communicates with all stakeholders both vertically and horizontally to ensure all efforts, whether project or support related, is ratified, understood, is in accordance with security plus architecture best practices, and is agreed upon by stakeholders. This position also must have a thorough knowledge of operating systems (such as Linux, Unix, Microsoft, z/OS) to aid in troubleshooting., The Office of the Secretary serves as the executive leadership arm of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), guiding the Department's mission to improve the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians. The IT division (ITD) is one of the divisions that report to the Operational Excellence portfolio. The ITD division comprises four sections: Implementation and Operations, Strategy and Workforce, Enterprise Technology, and Vendor and Finance. Veterans' and National Guard Preference

Requirements
The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:
- Considerable knowledge of Windows server operating systems.
- Considerable knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux server operating systems.
- Considerable knowledge of VMware and Horizon View., Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." Bachelor's degree in computer science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in systems software programming
OR
Associate degree in computer science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in systems software programming
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary Grade Range: $81,504.00 - $122,256.00 Recruitment Range: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00
