Job description
A leader in life sciences is looking to recruit a System Controls Design Engineer to lead the design, modelling, and optimisation of next-generation ultra-low-temperature refrigeration systems. This role is ideal for an engineer who thrives in a technical, cross-functional environment and enjoys turning complex system challenges into elegant, high-performance solutions. Based in Essex, you will benefit from a starting salary of up to £62k plus enhanced pension, private medical insurance and excellent career opportunities.
As System Controls Design Engineer, responsibilities will include;
- Refrigeration system design - Develop ultra-low-temperature refrigeration systems and define system architecture with cross-functional teams.
- Control development - Create and optimise PID and advanced control algorithms for precise, stable temperature regulation.
- Modelling & simulation - Build, simulate, and validate high-fidelity system models to guide design decisions.
- Performance optimisation - Analyse system data, refine thermodynamic efficiency, and drive continuous improvements.
- Hardware & supplier integration - Integrate sensors, actuators, and components while supporting sourcing and supplier collaboration.
- Documentation & compliance - Produce technical specifications and ensure adherence to ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and manufacturing requirements., * Engineering background - Bachelor's or Master's in Control Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, or related engineering discipline.
Requirements

Control systems expertise - Strong experience in PID control, system dynamics, and real-world control implementation.

Modelling & simulation skills - Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools.

Control software experience - Embedded or industrial control software development capability.

System integration knowledge - Strong understanding of sensors, actuators, and integrated system behaviour.
