Job description
This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
Maintains and supports computer workstations, desktop and laptop computers running a variety of operating systems as may be used at the City. Primary activities are in support of Microsoft network and desktop operating systems.
Installs, configures, and upgrades hardware and peripheral components (such as monitors, printers, modems, scanners).
Performs system backups, executes jobs and manages the tape library. Purges and archives computer data according to predetermined guidelines.
Maintains the City's website, using website development software.
Installs, sets up, and supports MS-Office applications and other software on desktop computers; performs routine and complex diagnostics.
Troubleshoots and resolves complex hardware, software, and network related problems.
Provides basic support for telecommunications environment including, but not limited to dial up modems, access to network services, file transfer and associated software.
Maintains inventory of software and hardware applications installed on servers and PC's.
Reviews user requests for hardware, software and peripheral components to ensure that the requests are compatible with the users' needs and City's standards.
Supports the telephone, security alarm, access control, audio/visual and other electronic systems used by the City, as well as specialized software used in the processing of payroll, accounting, human resources, building permitting and other services.
Performs other system-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge of current principles and practices of computer systems technology. Knowledge of PC hardware and software systems. Knowledge of PC and file server operating system components. Knowledge of networking and local area networking. Knowledge of current hardware and software research and trends in the computer industry. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows. Skilled in maintaining and troubleshooting computer operating systems.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing with all levels of management and staff. Ability to utilize strong analytical skills and problem solving methods. Ability to install and troubleshoot highly complex PC hardware and software. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, Department/Office Directors, City employees and the public., Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; supplemented by two (2) years of desktop support experience. Network+ and A+ certification Preferred. Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Must possess a broad knowledge of microcomputer hardware and software functionality, including specific experience working within a Microsoft Windows based LAN environment. Experience with GIS, EDEN, OSSI, or any public safety experience is a plus. Applicants qualifying for employment that are assigned to the Police Department will be subject to a polygraph examination and an extensive background screening.
