Job description
Under limited supervision performs instruction related to a variety of community programs and activities offered in the Community Services Division including but not limited to recreation and senior programs. Responsible for planning, executing, and instruction of specialized classes and programs for varying ages, in all levels from basic to advanced; and to perform related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class require a moderate amount of previous instruction experience in the specialized class or program provided. Positions in this class perform work which is varied, creative, and independent. Work is reviewed periodically, and feedback from program participants is used in the evaluation. Incumbents are expected to utilize their discretion for typical variations in work and consult their immediate supervisor for further direction in difficult situations.
Examples of Duties Prepares program and class lessons; instructs and leads groups of participants in a specific subject or lesson; establishes and enforces class/program rules and policies for participants; utilizes skills and knowledge to effectively convey class content to participants; prepares site for activity and ensures proper clean-up at the end of each class/program; sets up and breaks down the room, field, or facility where instruction is held; collects fees; ensures proper recordkeeping of participants including attendance and payment per session; orders supplies and materials; engages with participants before and after class; follows all safety procedures; light custodial; handles minor disagreements between participants; use specialized art, music, exercise, or other equipment related to the topic of instruction; accompany participants on field trips; effectively responds to emergencies related to participants or the facility; assists with special events; and other duties as assigned., * Provide assistance and instruction to participants and volunteers;
- Read, understand and apply simple materials;
- Supervise and evaluate the work of others;
- Generate interest of participants in class/program including creating new programs;
- Adapt and modify lessons as necessary;
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
- Work independently;
- Lift and move tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies;
- Perform light custodial duties.
Hours:
- The incumbent will work approximately two (2) to ten (10) hours a week.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain the certificate within two (2) months of hire., Education: * Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance. Experience:* One (1) year of experience in preparing program or class lessons and instructing groups of participants.
Desirable Qualification:
- Experience working with senior citizens or youth., Knowledge of:
- Thorough knowledge of specialized subject matter of class/program;
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of instructional procedures and practices;
- Basic math and record keeping procedures;
- Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, data entry, Microsoft Office, Internet, and custom program based software;
- Effective communication that facilitates learning;
- Customer service principles and practices;
- Proper methods, materials, tools, chemicals, and equipment used in the class/program;
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures., Strength: Light work-occasional lifting, carrying and/or pushing up to 25 pounds maximum; with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Physical activities include: ability to lead and participate in activities; sitting and/or standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching, walking, up to and including the possibility of climbing a ladder to reach inventory supplies; assist elderly and disabled clients as necessary; and the ability to work flexible scheduled shifts including weekends., for otherwise qualified candidates with disabilities, must be requested in writing at the time of application submission. Applicants must meet each qualification for the position at the time of application submission. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Selection shall be made from those applicants who submit a complete employment application and supplemental questionnaire, meet the position requirements, receive a passing score on an initial application screening and receive a qualifying score on an oral interview, weighted 100%. Candidates may be required to obtain CPR and First Aid certification at their expense. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen and a background investigation. Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.
