Job description
- Maintain and improve the backend services powering MiMIAT's patient mobile app and clinician web platform.
- Develop and maintain backend features using TypeScript / JavaScript, Node.js, and Express.js.
- Build and refine REST APIs connected to authentication, patient-clinician workflows, consent-based access, notifications, and longitudinal health data.
- Manage NoSQL databases, especially MongoDB with Mongoose.
- Deploy and maintain backend infrastructure using AWS, Docker, and other cloud services.
- Implement and maintain authentication and authorization flows using JWT.
- Use Bruno, Postman, or similar tools to test backend endpoints and support frontend/backend integration.
- Support the mobile team with specific React Native + Expo tasks when needed, including Android / iOS builds, certificates, release channels, EAS Update, and OTA updates.
- Work collaboratively using Git and help document backend logic, technical decisions, and product architecture.
Requirements
- You have around 2+ years of hands-on backend experience with TypeScript / JavaScript, Node.js, Express.js, and REST API development.
- You have practical experience with MongoDB and Mongoose, or strong database experience with the ability to adapt quickly to a MongoDB-based backend.
- You have worked with authentication and authorization flows, ideally including JWT, protected routes, and role-based access logic.
- You have hands-on experience deploying and maintaining backend services on AWS. Experience with Docker or similar DevOps tools is a plus.
- You are comfortable testing APIs with Bruno, Postman, or similar tools.
- You understand how backend systems connect with mobile apps, web platforms, notifications, emails, file uploads, and user workflows.
- You are comfortable joining an early-stage product, where ownership, documentation, pragmatic decisions, and clear communication matter.
- You are specifically looking for a pro-bono / volunteer opportunity where you can contribute meaningfully, strengthen your CV, gain real product experience, and support a mission-driven healthtech startup.
- Bonus if you have experience with digital health, patient-facing products, sensitive data environments, GDPR, Firebase, SendGrid, CI/CD, testing, or clinician-facing platforms.
- Additional plus if you can support React Native / Expo workflows, including EAS builds, OTA updates, or app release processes.
Benefits & conditions
- This is currently an initial pro-bono/volunteer collaboration, designed for someone who wants to contribute to a real HealthTech product at an early stage while gaining hands-on experience and strengthening their CV in the startup and digital health space.
- There is the possibility of exploring a formal collaboration over time, if it makes sense for both sides and for the startup's evolution.
- You'll work directly on live patient and clinician-facing products already deployed in the market.
- You'll gain hands-on exposure to backend development in digital health, chronic care, patient-generated health data, clinician workflows, consent-based data sharing, and real-world deployment.
- You'll collaborate closely with the founder and technical team on MiMIAT's next stage of product growth.
- You'll contribute to a mission focused on making chronic care more connected, dignified, inclusive, and patient-centered.
- Join a social impact HealthTech startup backed by AstraZeneca ACCIÓN, Google Startups for Sustainable Development, NVIDIA Inception, and ESADE eWorks, working with public health institutions and recently recognized at European level through the PRECISEU Best Practice Recognition Awards.
About the company
MiMIAT Health is a patient-owned unified longitudinal record that enables data continuity and makes disease evolution visible across fragmented care settings for multidisciplinary teams managing hard-to-diagnose diseases.
Our first live module focuses on gastrointestinal health, and we are already working across healthcare and institutional environments, with recognition from AstraZeneca ACCIÓN, Google Startups for Sustainable Development, NVIDIA Inception, and ESADE eWorks.
Our mission? To give patients back control, reduce delays in care, and make chronic disease management more dignified, inclusive, and data-driven.
