Job description

It's an exciting time to join us. As an Enterprise Engineer, you'll play a key role in developing and maintaining our server, storage and cloud environments, ensuring our critical systems are resilient, secure and ready to support a digital first organisation., As an Enterprise Engineer, you will work alongside a skilled team to deliver a highly technical support function responsible for:

  • Managing data storage, backup and server infrastructure to ensure availability, capacity and security across both on premises and cloud environments.
  • Supporting and administering enterprise services, databases, application firewalls and perimeter security services.
  • Implementing new core components of the IT infrastructure to support the Council's digital transformation activity.
  • Delivering complex third¿line support and undertaking detailed technical investigations.
  • Providing guidance and mentoring to Enterprise Analysts, supporting the development of technical capability within the team.
  • Ensuring documentation, compliance and technical standards are maintained to support business continuity and service resilience., * This is a hybrid position, with work split between home and City Hall, as agreed with your manager.
  • Please note that occasional evening and weekend work may be required to support critical IT operations and service continuity.
  • This role is advertised on a full-time, part-time, and job share basis, as we proudly support flexible working arrangements., Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver the Corporate and Service plans.
  • Take a collaborative approach to delivering IT support across the Council to deliver positive outcomes beyond traditional service boundaries where required and directed by encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experience across the council
  • Contribute to the development of Council's IT strategies and policies to deliver strategic aims and objectives across all service areas
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues across the council on cross cutting corporate issues/projects to promote a culture of continuous improvement and good governance
  • To promote an open and supportive culture which maximizes the potential of employees across the council and encourages inclusivity, innovation and high performance

Key service related accountabilities

  • Lead on work priorities/objectives set by the Enterprise Systems Lead and develop work plans to deliver those objectives and to support organisational service delivery ensuring the council has a digitally enabled workforce.
  • Provide system engineering support to the server, database and storage infrastructure systems used by the council, ensuring all incidents and service requests are appropriately logged, prioritised and progressed efficiently and effectively
  • Analysing infrastructure to proactively determine inefficiencies and problems and recommending well thought out solutions
  • To be aware of emerging technologies and how to deploy these within the council.
  • Overseeing the development, installation, configuration, and administration of enterprise systems.
  • Training colleagues on new systems, protocols, and best practices.
  • Working with on premise and cloud technology
  • Responding, managing and resolving faults as they occur, liaising with 3rd party vendors and adhering to agreed SLA's
  • Responding to service requests as allocated by the Enterprise Systems Lead. To test all changes and to ensure change plans are documented and followed.
  • Carrying out proactive maintenance work as identified and programmed
  • Deliver technical support, advising of risks, making recommendations and supporting the maintenance of the IT systems in order to maximise performance as well as ensuring the security of the systems and networks
  • Collaborate and support the wider team to ensure systems are operational and that users are kept up to date with any fault resolution
  • Proactively ensure all agreed solutions are prioritised and available in the event of an incident under the business continuity plan and ensure business continuity recovery systems are regularly tested
  • Provide management information and statistics as required
  • Produce documentation for all technical work undertaken including writing operational technical procedures
  • Identify any areas of risk and how to mitigate risk levels and ensure any risks are escalated in a timely manner
  • Look for opportunities to bring in income streams into the Council and horizon scanning for digital opportunities and efficiency savings across the organisation
  • Ensuring that professional advice is provided to all service areas across the council across the areas covered by this post
  • Ensure the security of the systems meets statutory requirements and that all audit/compliance requirements are met
  • Support the development and delivery of the Council's digital strategy (including digital inclusion) ensuring engagement with all stakeholders and partners to achieve successful digital transformation/infrastructure for all service users
  • Manage the delivery and development of effective and efficient customer service channels that meet customer needs and manage demand meeting statutory and legal requirements, * Monitoring and maintaining the Council's core infrastrucure including deployment of software updates and patches accross the estate.
  • Managing the backup processes and ensuring FTP services are available.
  • Lead on and collaborate on infrastructure projects for new integrations or existing system upgrades ensuring detailed documentation is drafted during implementation.
  • Lead investigations into complex technical issues, using research and problem-solving skills to proactively find solutions independently.
  • Deliver clear, empathetic, and professional support to internal customers, ensuring a high standard of service.
  • Maintain accurate records in the fault and service request management system.
  • Occasionally support out-of-hours work for critical operations.
  • Maintain and manage Unix and Oracle systems alongside critical databases.

Requirements

Do you have experience in vCenter?, * Demonstrable experience in enterprise level technical infrastructure engineering.

  • Strong understanding and formal training across technologies such as Microsoft Windows Server, Solaris Unix, VMWare, Hyper-V. Azure and SAN technologies.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear support to teams across the organisation.
  • The ability to research and implement effective technical solutions and projects independently.
  • A proactive approach, strong problem solving capability and the ability to manage a varied and challenging workload.

  • Strong experience with VMware technologies: vCenter, ESXi, NSX, VCF etc
  • Previous expierence managing the Office 365 suite including Exchange online, Sharepoint and Teams,
  • Experience with Windows Server environments
  • Ability to write clear and consise documentation.
  • Backup Management and DR practices understood.
  • Expierence with remediating vulnerabilities and liasing with relevant parties and vendors.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Desire to skill up and learn new technologies, * Proven experience in a 3rd-Line IT support role.
  • Ability to independently research and resolve issues without relying on others
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, empathy, and professionalism in customer interactions
  • Formal training or equivalent experience in the technologies listed above
