Job description
PerfectServe is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to serve as a key technical leader across our engineering organization. This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who excels at solving complex, ambiguous problems and raising the technical bar across multiple teams. The Staff Engineer operates at the intersection of hands-on engineering, system design, and cross-functional influence - without the direct management responsibilities of a people-leader role. You will work closely with engineering managers, architects, and product leaders to shape technical strategy, drive adoption of engineering best practices, and deliver high-impact solutions in our Python- and React-based platform. This role is remote-friendly and org-wide in scope., Technical Leadership
- Define and drive architectural decisions that span multiple teams and services, balancing long-term sustainability with near-term delivery needs.
- Identify and resolve high-priority technical risks, bottlenecks, and systemic issues across the platform before they become production problems.
- Own the technical direction of cross-team initiatives from inception through delivery, including design documentation, stakeholder alignment, and implementation.
- Establish and champion engineering standards, patterns, and best practices that improve consistency, reliability, and developer productivity organization-wide.
Hands-On Engineering
- Contribute production-quality code to critical, high-complexity features and platform services using Python and React.
- Lead major refactors and modernization efforts, improving performance, observability, and maintainability of core systems.
- Write and review Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts, and CI/CD pipeline configurations (Jenkins, ArgoCD) to support reliable, repeatable deployments.
- Implement and promote automated testing strategies - unit, integration, and end-to-end - that maintain confidence in a fast-moving codebase.
Mentorship & Engineering Culture
- Serve as a technical mentor and thought partner to senior and intermediate engineers, helping them grow through code reviews, design discussions, and informal coaching.
- Lead internal tech talks, brown bags, and documentation efforts to disseminate technical knowledge across the organization.
- Participate actively in the engineering hiring process, including technical interviews and calibration, helping raise the quality of the team.
- Model the behaviors of a high-trust, high-ownership engineering culture: bias for action, direct communication, and shared accountability for outcomes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Product Owners and QA leads to shape roadmap priorities through a technical lens, identifying dependencies and sequencing work for maximum impact.
- Communicate complex technical tradeoffs clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including engineering leadership and product management.
- Collaborate with DevOps and platform teams to improve infrastructure automation, observability tooling, and cloud resource efficiency on AWS.
- Represent engineering in cross-functional planning forums, contributing to roadmap shaping, capacity planning, and technical risk discussions.
Requirements
Technical leader driving architecture, cross-team initiatives, and engineering best practices. Hands-on contributor in Python and React, leading refactors, CI/CD, Kubernetes, testing, and AWS-based platform improvements while mentoring engineers and collaborating with product, QA, and DevOps., * 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 3 years operating at a senior or staff level in a distributed, product-focused engineering organization.
- Deep expertise in Python and at least one modern web framework (Django, FastAPI, or Flask); working proficiency in React or a comparable frontend framework.
- Demonstrated experience leading the design and delivery of complex, multi-team technical initiatives - not just contributing to them.
- Strong command of distributed systems concepts: service decomposition, event-driven architectures, API design, caching strategies, and data consistency patterns.
- Proficiency with Kubernetes, containerization (Docker), and modern CI/CD toolchains (Jenkins, Helm, ArgoCD).
- Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization at scale.
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services (ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, SQS/SNS, CloudWatch).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to produce clear, audience-appropriate technical documentation and design artifacts.
- A track record of improving engineering culture and practices - through mentorship, documentation, process improvements, or tooling - not just shipping features.
Beneficial Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in the healthcare technology sector, particularly with systems subject to HIPAA or similar regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with message queue systems such as RabbitMQ or Kafka.
- Experience with observability and monitoring platforms (New Relic, Datadog, Prometheus/Grafana).
- Contributions to internal developer experience tooling, platform engineering, or engineering enablement initiatives.
- Experience with GoLang or other backend languages used in a polyglot service environment.
Benefits & conditions
- Remote flexibility and a healthy work-life balance.
- A collaborative, mission-driven team with a strong culture of ownership and transparency.
- Competitive compensation, a comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision), and a 401(k) / RRSP plan based on your location.
- A dedicated annual professional development budget for courses, certifications, and conferences.
- The opportunity to make a meaningful, positive impact on the lives of healthcare workers and patients every day.
