Job description

The SharePoint Migration Technical Lead is responsible for the end-to-end technical leadership of large-scale migrations from SharePoint 2013/2016/2019 on-premises environments to SharePoint Online (SPO). This role owns the migration architecture, archival strategy, tooling execution, Power Platform customization, and technical governance across multiple migration waves. The Technical Lead works closely with Solution Architects, Migration Factory teams, Security, Compliance, and Business Site Owners to ensure migrations are secure, compliant, performant, and business-aligned, while minimizing disruption and ensuring successful adoption.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Migration Technical Leadership Act as the primary technical authority for SharePoint Online migration activities. Define and enforce migration standards, patterns, and best practices across all waves. Lead technical decision-making for complex site, workflow, and customization scenarios. Serve as escalation point for L3 migration issues, failures, and performance bottlenecks., Lead migrations from SharePoint 2013 / 2016 / 2019 farms to SharePoint Online. Design and execution: o Site collections o Subsites o Document libraries o Lists and metadata o Permissions and security models Drive modernization efforts, including: o Classic Modern site transformations o InfoPath / Designer workflows remediation o Web part replacement strategies

  1. Archival Strategy & Data Lifecycle Management Design and implement enterprise archival strategies, including: o Identification of ROT (Redundant, Obsolete, Trivial) data o Business-approved archival criteria o Legal hold and compliance alignment Define archival vs migration decision frameworks with stakeholders. Implement archival solutions leveraging: o SharePoint Online Archive o Azure storage-based archival patterns o Third-party archival tooling (as applicable) Ensure archival aligns with records management, retention labels, and eDiscovery requirements., Lead hands-on execution and governance of migration tools such as: o Sharegate o Microsoft Migration Manager o PowerShell automation frameworks Design pre-migration assessments, including: o Site readiness scoring o Customization and dependency analysis o Security and permissions mapping Define retry, rollback, and re-sync strategies for failed migrations., Lead remediation and modernization of SharePoint customizations using: o Power Apps (Canvas & Model-Driven Apps) o Power Automate workflows Convert or redesign: o Legacy workflows (SharePoint Designer / InfoPath) o Custom forms o Business process automations Ensure Power Platform solutions are: o Secure o Scalable o Governed under tenant standards Collaborate with Power Platform CoE for governance and lifecycle management.

  1. Security, Compliance & Governance Ensure migrations comply with: o Organizational security standards o Regulatory requirements (HIPAA, SOC2, etc., as applicable) Validate: o Permissions inheritance and access models o External sharing configurations o Sensitivity labels and retention policies Partner with Security and Compliance teams on pre- and post-migration validation.

  1. Wave-Based Migration Execution & Hypercare Support wave-based migration planning, including: o Freeze windows o Delta migrations o Cutover activities Lead technical readiness for: o User Acceptance Testing (UAT) o Business sign-off Provide hypercare technical leadership, ensuring: o Rapid issue resolution o Performance stabilization o Knowledge transfer to support teams

  1. Documentation & Knowledge Transfer Create and maintain: o Migration runbooks o Architecture decision records (ADRs) o Archival and remediation playbooks Support KT sessions for: o Support teams o Platform owners o Business power users

Requirements

Core SharePoint Expertise Deep hands-on experience with: o SharePoint 2013 / 2016 / 2019 (on-prem) o SharePoint Online (Modern Experience) Strong understanding of: o Site collections, hubs, and information architecture o Metadata, content types, and managed taxonomy o Permissions, AD/AAD integration, and security trimming


Migration & Archival Proven experience leading large-scale SharePoint migrations (100s 1000s of sites). Strong expertise in: o Migration assessments and remediation planning o Archival strategy and execution o Retention, records management, and legal holds Hands-on with Sharegate and PowerShell automation., o Power Apps (Canvas and Model-Driven) o Power Automate (cloud flows, approvals, integrations) Experience modernizing legacy SharePoint customizations using Power Platform.


Microsoft 365 Ecosystem Strong knowledge of: o Microsoft 365 tenant architecture o Azure AD / Entra ID o OneDrive and Teams integration considerations Understanding of licensing impacts on migration and archival decisions.


Soft Skills & Leadership Strong stakeholder communication skills (technical and executive). Ability to translate complex technical risks into business-friendly language. Proven experience leading distributed migration teams (onshore/offshore). High attention to detail with strong documentation discipline., Experience in healthcare, regulated, or highly compliant environments. Microsoft certifications in SharePoint, Power Platform, or M365. Prior experience in migration factory or large transformation programs.
