Job description
The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) is seeking a full time System Administrator / Network Administrator to support the Information Technology Department. The successful candidate will support the computing, networking, and cybersecurity needs of NMC's research programs and business operations. The NMC IT department develops, maintains, and secures a broad range of computing environments, including enterprise systems, research computing platforms, high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, cloud resources, data storage systems, and network infrastructure.
The System Administrator / Network Administrator serves as the lead administrator for NMC's network infrastructure while also contributing to the administration and support of Linux-based systems, research computing environments, and cybersecurity initiatives. This position is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of network services and associated computing infrastructure.
The successful candidate will support system integration, testing, deployment, configuration management, performance analysis, security compliance, and operational reliability of production systems. Responsibilities include administering enterprise and research networking environments; supporting HPC and cloud infrastructure; diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues; evaluating and deploying new technologies; and developing technical documentation, procedures, and best practices.
The position requires collaboration with researchers, staff, vendors, universities, and partner organizations. Opportunities exist to contribute to technical presentations, publications, and conferences. Mentoring students, junior staff, and peers is highly valued, as is maintaining expertise in modern networking, systems administration, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies. Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and administering network infrastructure, including:
Routing and switching
VLAN implementation
Firewall administration
VPN technologies
ISP connectivity and failover solutions
Network security practices
Experience administering Linux-based systems in a production environment.
Strong Linux command-line proficiency.
Experience with scripting languages such as Bash, Python, Perl, or equivalent.
Experience with configuration management and automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, SaltStack, Chef, or similar.
Knowledge of core infrastructure services including DNS, DHCP, LDAP, Kerberos, and authentication systems.
Experience supporting software environments, user applications, and resource scheduling systems.
Experience using Git or similar version-control systems.
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Effective in planning and operating a large project.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Demonstrated ability to independently analyze complex technical problems and develop, implement, and document effective solutions.
Advanced experience designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise and research network architectures.
Expert-level knowledge of vendor networking platforms such as Juniper (Junos), Cisco, Arista, Palo Alto, Fortinet, or equivalent technologies.
Extensive experience administering production Linux systems and implementing security best practices.
Advanced scripting and automation expertise using Python, Bash, or similar languages.
Demonstrated experience implementing Infrastructure-as-Code and automated deployment methodologies.
Strong knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, and related platforms.
