Job description

The EXPLORE funding project aims to provide interested scientists at Bielefeld University and other partners from science and industry with a high-performance infrastructure for research on AI-based robotic systems. These AI-based systems are modelled in the infrastructure as active digital twins on the basis of scalable graphics and AI accelerators, trained in a highly realistic digital environment and optimised in operation through interaction with the real world.

As part of this project, we are looking for an academic co-worker with sound knowledge in the areas of simulation and virtualisation of technical systems, as well as a research interest in mobile robotic systems.

The research work should be carried out both in the research infrastructure in the digital twin and in practical scenarios with physical robot systems in a tracking laboratory in order to systematically evaluate the gap between behaviour in the digital twin and in reality. As part of the Cognitive Systems Engineering team in the Faculty of Technology and CITEC, you will benefit from an exciting interdisciplinary research environment with excellent laboratory equipment in the CoR-Lab, as well as a strong network with connections to Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, university partners in Germany and abroad and contacts to research-related industry.

  • modelling, simulation, design and integration of mobile robotic systems, realisation of active digital twins, evaluation of Sim2Real and Real2Sim transfer
  • publications and presentations at scientific symposia
  • teaching (20 %): Assistance in teaching and supervision of student work (Bachelor's and Master's theses)
  • other tasks (5 %): Collaboration in organisational tasks of the EXPLORE project

Employment is conducive to scientific qualification and provides the opportunity for further academic development.

Requirements

  • completed scientific university degree in computer science, automation technology or related subject areas with good to very good grades
  • sound expertise in two of the following areas: Autonomous systems, mobile robotics, simulation, Real2Sim / Sim2Real transfer, localisation
  • good programming skills in C++, Java or Python
  • experience with ROS/ROS2, Gazebo, IsaacSim or similar
  • an independent, self-reliant and committed way of working
  • cooperative and team-orientated way of working
