They're looking for someone with strong AWS experience and solid CI/CD chops. GitLab is preferred but not a dealbreaker if you've got the rest of the stack. Ideally you'll also have some background in fintech, payments, or another regulated environment, though we'd still want to hear from strong platform engineers without that specific exposure if everything else lines up.

About the company

We're recruiting the first dedicated Platform Engineer for a well-funded fintech startup building digital wallet infrastructure for UK businesses. They've raised a healthy Series A, sit at around 30 people, and have an engineering team of 10 that's growing steadily. The product sits in the embedded payments space, white-label wallet infrastructure that businesses use to offer their own customers branded spending accounts, loyalty schemes, and prepaid cards without building any of it themselves. They process millions in wallet transactions every month and volume is doubling quarter on quarter, so the infrastructure has to keep pace with that growth. Up to now the CTO has been holding the platform together himself, alongside everything else on his plate. That's worked while the team's been small, but it's not sustainable as the roadmap grows and the engineering team scales. This hire is about bringing in someone to take full ownership of the platform and build it out properly, rather than have it remain something the CTO fits in around his other responsibilities. You'll own infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, and developer experience from day one. There's no legacy mess to untangle here, but there is real scope to shape how things get done. You'll report directly to the CTO and have a genuine say in how the platform evolves over the next 12 to 18 months. As the engineering team grows, there's a clear path to building out a platform function underneath you and hiring your own team. It's a remote-first role with the team coming together in the London office roughly once a fortnight, so you can be based anywhere in the UK as long as you're happy to travel in for those days.
