Job description

Linaro maintains a hardware testing lab at its office in Harston, Cambridgeshire. The lab hosts devices for customers, taking responsibility for power, networking, LAVA configuration, and remote access.

The role is primarily expected to work in the Harston office, for a minimum of 3 days a week. Remote management is feasible but onsite attendance is required for hands-on troubleshooting and setup work.

Team members are required to be self-motivated and capable of working independently as well as part of the team. They are encouraged to identify areas for improvement in the Lab, as well as opportunities for where the Lab's service could be used. Team members need good organisational skills, attention to detail, and good record keeping (e.g. updates to tickets to keep colleagues informed, writing documentation for knowledge sharing with the team).

This role has the following responsibilities:

  • Implementation, maintenance, and management of the racks, internal network, power, and cabling.
  • Setting up customer equipment.
  • Maintenance of a git repository that acts as the source of truth for the physical inventory, rack layouts, cabling maps, and device placement within the room.
  • Assisting with the troubleshooting of test automation workers and DUT (device under test) issues.
  • Setting up new core infrastructure (e.g. core switches, edge switches, PDUs, UPSes).
  • Use Atlassian Jira to react to support tickets and planned project work.

This list of responsibilities is not exclusive or exhaustive, and the post holder may be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the post.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge and experience of VLANs, link aggregation, routing, network troubleshooting.
  • Experience of best practices for placing equipment in racks, e.g. cable routing, shelving, PDU mounting.
  • Management of pfSense.
  • Management of Linux systems, primarily software installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Preferred experience:

  • Knowledge and understanding of:
  • Git (for documentation and configuration tracking)
  • Docker
  • Tailscale

Advantageous experience:

  • Knowledge and experience of LAVA
  • Experience with automation and CI/CD tools (e.g. Ansible, GitLab CI)
  • Basic familiarity with network and environmental monitoring concepts (e.g. SNMP, Prometheus) to support future infrastructure rollouts.
