Job description

Our Critical Infrastructure Team (and in this case the Critical Infrastructure Engineer) is responsible for the monitoring, maintenance, and management of our most critical infrastructure environments, such as ISPs, CSPs, and enterprise customers. The team's primary focus is placed on ensuring the availability of networking infrastructure, which includes all forms of routing, switching, and firewalling across a multitude of vendors; server infrastructure, including virtualization platforms; storage networks, such as high availability SANs; and cybersecurity functions related to these environments, often in coordination with the Cybersecurity team. Secondary focus is also placed with customer infrastructures that may not be defined as critical infrastructure when their higher-level skill sets are needed or when the need arises to address priority issues facing customers. Although the Critical Infrastructure Engineer's primary responsibility is critical infrastructure customers, we always work as a team to deliver the best service for all customers.

Additionally, the Critical Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing both greenfield and brownfield technology solutions for new and existing clients on a project basis. Examples include scoping and implementing a new Nutanix virtual cluster and migrating all virtual workloads from VMWare and Hyper-V environments; performing assessment of existing multi-site network environment, including routers, switches and firewalls; providing recommendations for new network equipment and network design; and performing implementation of new network design which includes the migration of production services to the new infrastructure.

This is a technology-based, problem-solving position that bridges business needs and objectives with technological solutions. Strong, primary emphasis is placed on but not limited to network design, management, logging, monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting, scaling, and resiliency. Optionally, some emphasis will be placed on network security to include data and management plane security, flow analysis, routing protocol security, blackhole routing, and protection of the network infrastructure in general. Also, of importance is understanding how the network infrastructure interacts with business processes, business operations, and customer expectations.

Critical Infrastructure Engineers do not work in a silo, and as such are encouraged to continuously build their skill sets. For example, learning how to design/manage various firewalls is highly recommended as the CIE will undoubtedly come across firewalls in almost all infrastructures. Other subject matters will, at some point, include remote access VPN, site-to-site VPN, and other forms of secure remote access.

The CIE will maintain customer relationships during pre- and post-sales stages and become a trusted advocate for our customers. Pre-sales engagements include onsite visits to assess needs, building out Build of Materials, determining best hardware/software solutions, and designing network infrastructure. Post-sales engagements include anything from small configurations to major projects, deploying hardware/software, to troubleshooting issues, or investigating outages.

Roles and Responsibilities

· Foster an environment that encourages top-notch network infrastructure practices across all our clients.

· Utilize your expertise to improve customer's cybersecurity posture from a networking/systems perspective. For example, providing solutions to ISP customers that reflect practices in NIST cybersecurity 800 series documents.

· Utilize your expertise to build LightChange network infrastructure offerings to include data center switching, enterprise routing, service provider routing, and connectivity to backbone providers.

· Master networking skillsets in the areas of OSPF, BGP, Autonomous Systems, RPKI, and others. NOTE: Must know and understand BGP or be ready to take a crash course in it based on existing knowledge of routing protocols.

· Work with our ISP, CSP, and enterprise customers to monitor, maintain, manage, and improve their network infrastructures.

· Communicate clearly with your team and customers.

· Prioritize network infrastructure workloads based on customer priorities and input.

· Manage customer expectations.

· Maintain relations between vendors, LightChange, and customers. Vendors include, in order of priority: Arista, Cisco, and Juniper.

· Share suggestions on how to improve operations or the customer experience.

· Be willing to take Arista Level 3 certifications.

· Be willing to become, if not already, a subject matter expert with all Arista products.

· Learn and understand Logicmonitor

· NOTE: After becoming acclimated, must be available after hours for critical infrastructure and also be available on a 24x7 rotation for Overwatch. We only get about 3-4 afterhours alerts a year.

· NOTE: Must be able to schedule projects after hours as the need arises.
