Job description
You'll take ownership of an existing, large-scale Linux estate - cloud servers backed by tens of thousands of bare-metal edge devices powering critical emergency systems - working alongside our current Linux engineering team to keep it performing reliably at scale while meeting strict security standards. Day to day, this means everything you'd expect from a strong Linux engineer - server administration, automation, patching and hardening - but applied across both our cloud servers and an estate of edge devices measured in the tens of thousands rather than the tens. A solid grounding in Linux security and a genuine interest in doing things properly at scale are essential., * Look after an established estate of tens of thousands of bare-metal Linux edge devices, together with the cloud servers behind them, ensuring performance, security and reliability at scale.
- Design, build and maintain core Linux cloud servers and the wider bare-metal edge fleet, identifying and resolving bottlenecks before they become problems.
- Implement and maintain strict security protocols to protect systems and data across the estate.
- Regularly monitor for vulnerabilities, apply patches and conduct security audits.
- Configure and manage firewalls, intrusion detection systems and VPNs.
- Write Bash / Shell scripts and build automation to manage updates, monitoring and backups consistently across thousands of devices.
- Configure and maintain DNS, DHCP and VPNs, and troubleshoot network-related issues.
- Work with MQTT and related technologies to support real-time communication across the edge fleet.
- Help build and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) for application build, testing and deployment.
- Create and maintain clear documentation for system configurations and procedures, in line with our ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 standards.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance system reliability and efficiency.
Requirements
- Strong, all-round Linux engineering and systems administration, comfortable working across any distribution (our estate runs primarily on Ubuntu)
- A strong security foundation - hardening, patching, vulnerability management and secure-by-design thinking
- Bash / Shell scripting for automation at scale
- Network configuration and security (DNS, DHCP, VPNs, firewalls)
- Managing large-scale edge device fleets - tens of thousands of devices - and the tooling that makes that practical
- Cloud server administration - running core, backend Linux servers on Microsoft Azure
- Infrastructure as Code and automation - hands-on with Ansible and/or Terraform
- Containerisation - Docker / Podman
- MQTT (or similar lightweight messaging) for real-time communication across the edge fleet
- Certificate infrastructure / PKI for device identity and secure communication at scale
- CI/CD and release automation - GitHub Actions for application build, test and deployment (a smaller but growing part of the role), * Minimum 3 years' experience in Linux systems administration / infrastructure engineering, ideally including large or scalable estates.
- Strong all-round Linux knowledge, comfortable working across any distribution.
- A genuine security mindset and solid understanding of Linux hardening and best practice.
- Proficiency in Bash / Shell scripting for automation and task management.
- Strong understanding of networking protocols, services and security practices, including VPNs at scale.
- Relevant certifications are highly desirable - for example LPIC-1/LPIC-2, CompTIA Linux+, RHCSA, Ubuntu/Canonical certifications, or a security qualification such as CompTIA Security+. We'll also support the right person in working towards these.
- Experience with several of the modern fleet toolchain - Infrastructure as Code (Ansible, Terraform), containerisation (Docker / Podman), MQTT and certificate/PKI infrastructure - and the willingness to develop the rest.
- Passing familiarity with PHP and/or Go is a nice to have, but not required.
- Problem-solving - the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues efficiently.
- Communication - clear and effective verbal and written communication.
- Adaptability - eagerness to learn and adopt new technologies.
- Teamwork - the ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced environment., * Linux: 3 years (required)
