Durable Execution: A Revolutionary Abstraction for Building Resilient Applications

July 18, 2024 14:10 – 14:40 · 30 min STAGE 4 (500)

What this session covers

The introduction of database transactions in the 1970s liberated application developers from writing low-level code to ensure data consistency. Although transactions elevated our approach to managing data within our applications, decades passed without an equivalent high-level abstraction that guaranteed the durable execution of the application itself.

This talk will introduce and explore the concept of durable execution, which is based on nearly two decades of work designing and building large-scale distributed systems at Amazon, Microsoft, and Uber.

While this new programming model enables developers to build fault-tolerant applications, as with database transactions, it also simplifies the code and significantly boosts developer productivity. Come learn what durable execution is, how it works, and how organizations are already using it for mission-critical applications in production.
