Sink or Swim: What Swimming Teachs Us About Digital Accessibility

June 30, 2026

What this session covers

Imagine being told to swim laps, but the pool has no stairs, the water is opaque, and the lanes are unmarked. For many users, navigating the modern web feels exactly like that: an exhausting struggle against invisible barriers.

This lightning talk dives into the surprising parallels between aquatic environments and digital interfaces. Just as a pool requires clear markings, accessible entries, and safety standards to be usable by everyone, our digital products require intentional design to prevent users from “sinking.”

These are some of the key lessons that we will explore from the pool deck:

Underwater Signage: Swimmers rely on T-markers on the pool floor to know when to turn. Similarly, Screen Reader users rely on hidden “landmarks” and headers to navigate without visual cues.

Lane Line Stability: Without lane lines, swimmers collide. Consistent Navigation acts as a buffer, preventing users from getting lost in the “open water” of a complex site.

Goggle Clarity: Low-contrast text is like swimming with foggy goggles. Color Contrast ensures the path forward is sharp and legible, regardless of the user’s environment or vision.

These and other examples await you in this lightning talk!

Whether you’re a developer, designer, or product owner, you’ll walk away with a fresh perspective on why accessibility is the oxygen that keeps your users afloat. Stop letting your users tread water! Instead build digital spaces where everyone can swim with confidence.
