Job description
Bpost is looking for a Data Scientist / Operations Research Specialist with proven experience building and industrializing machine learning and optimization solutions.
In Belgium, Bpost operates in a context of structural mail decline, continued parcel growth, increasing operational variability, and strong competitive pressure. Better forecasting and optimization are therefore key to improving service (quality) and network efficiency (cost) across sorting, transport and distribution.
In this role, you will design, prototype and industrialize analytical solutions that drive operational and tactical decisions across Bpost’s network. This includes building robust decision-support tools such as forecasting and optimization models, and ensuring they are deployed, monitored and used in real operations.
You will work closely with operational stakeholders and IT teams to turn business problems into scalable, production-ready solutions. You will also help increase the analytics maturity of Bpost by moving use cases from ad hoc analysis or prototype stage toward robust, reusable and business-embedded analytical products.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of proven experience using both machine learning and operations research to solve real-world problems
- At least 5 years of proven experience designing, prototyping, deploying, and monitoring models in production environments
- Ability to translate business needs into pragmatic analytical solutions
- Interest in logistics, supply chain, and physical network decision-making
- Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Full proficiency in English. French and Dutch are a strong plus.
Tools & Technologies (Indicative stack):
- Programming & analytics: Python, SQL, pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn
- ML & forecasting: XGBoost, LightGBM, time series models
- Optimization: OR-Tools, Gurobi or similar solvers
- Engineering: Git, Airflow, Docker, CI/CD tooling
- Versioning & experimentation: MLflow, DVC, Weights & Biases, or similar
- Platforms: Conveyor, Databricks, Spark, Snowflake-connected environments, or similar cloud-based platforms
- AI & agentic systems: familiarity with LLM-based applications, AI agents, orchestration frameworks, or similar emerging technologies for decision support and workflow automation
