Job description
You’ll write and maintain embedded firmware for microcontroller-based products we design and build. This is not a big-company role where you own one driver; you’ll take features from requirements to bench-tested code, participate in board bring-up, and see your work go through our assembly line. You’ll work closely with the hardware design team, so comfort with reading schematics is important., * Develop embedded C/C++ firmware for MCU-based designs (STM32-class parts)
- Implement and debug communication protocols: CAN, UART, SPI, I2C, USB
- Support new board bring-up remotely - bench equipment is provided
- Write test firmware to support production and functional test
- Use Git/GitHub for source control with PR-based review
- Document as you go: interfaces, register maps, known issues
- Collaborate with hardware teams on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) design integration and soldering processes to ensure firmware compatibility with physical components.
- Conduct debugging and troubleshooting of embedded software using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal analyzers, and other engineering troubleshooting tools.
- Write comprehensive unit tests and perform software testing to ensure firmware reliability across different operating systems such as RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) environments or Linux-based systems.
- Support software quality assurance initiatives by performing code reviews, system integration testing, and automation of test procedures using Jenkins or similar CI/CD pipelines.
Requirements
- Proven experience in embedded systems development with a strong understanding of microcontroller programming (ARM architecture preferred).
- Proficiency in programming languages including C/C++, Python, JavaScript, Perl, Visual Basic.
- Knowledge of wireless communication protocols such as Zigbee, Ethernet, VoIP (Voice over IP), TCP/IP stack implementation.
- Hands-on experience with PCB design tools and soldering techniques; ability to work with sensors and electronic components effectively.
- Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or operating within an IoT ecosystem; understanding of network monitoring and security practices including encryption techniques.
- Familiarity with software development methodologies including Agile practices; experience with version control systems like Git or SVN is essential.
- Self-directed: remote work on a small team means nobody assigns you tickets all day

DL Engineering is a small, founder-led electronics design and manufacturing firm in southern Indiana. We take products from schematic through PCB layout, assembly, and firmware, all in-house. You’d be working directly with other engineers on real hardware that ships to real customers.
