Job description

We are looking for a senior, AI-native engineer to serve as the technical lead and architect for a production

healthcare data platform used to manage clinical workflows and device data at enterprise scale. The

platform is a modern, API-first Drupal 11 / PHP 8.3 application (LAMP-based: Linux, MySQL, PHP) that

serves as the backend for a decoupled React frontend, processing data for hundreds of thousands of

patients and millions of clinical records in a SOC 2 / HITRUST-certified, PHI-handling environment.

This is a player-coach role. You will own architecture decisions, write code daily, and lead a team of junior

developers responsible for maintaining and extending the platform. The engineering workflow is already

deeply AI-assisted-Claude Code with project-specific agent configurations, AI-powered code review, and

code-intelligence tooling are part of daily development. You will own, govern, and evolve that AI-native

workflow while mentoring junior engineers into it safely and productively.

What You’ll Do

Architecture & Technical Leadership

  • Own architecture decisions and technical trade-offs for a large Drupal codebase with 20+ custom

modules, breaking ambiguous requirements into clear, deliverable solutions

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of junior developers through code reviews, pairing, and structured

technical guidance

  • Set and enforce engineering standards: strict typing, dependency injection, static analysis (PHPStan,

PHPCS), and meaningful automated test coverage (PHPUnit kernel tests, Cypress e2e)

  • Plan and execute Drupal core and contrib upgrades, migrations, and security patching on a

compliance-critical production system

AI-Native Development Leadership

  • Own and evolve an established AI-assisted engineering workflow built on Claude Code, including

project agent configurations, prompting standards, and AI-powered code review

  • Define review and validation practices for AI-generated code-catching hallucinated APIs, subtle

bugs, security flaws, and over-engineering before they ship

  • Enforce safe and compliant AI usage in a PHI environment: no protected health information or

proprietary data exposed to external models without appropriate controls

  • Onboard and mentor junior developers in AI-assisted development-scaffolding, refactoring, testing,

debugging, and documentation-and measurably improve team delivery speed and quality

Platform & Integration Engineering

  • Design and maintain API-first backend services: JSON:API, REST, JSON-RPC, and GraphQL

endpoints consumed by a decoupled frontend

  • Build and maintain integrations with 10+ external vendor systems (EHR/device/CRM-class

integrations) using OAuth2, SAML, and OpenID Connect, with encrypted per-customer credentials

  • Develop data pipelines and background processing: Migrate API pipelines, queue workers (Drupal

Queue API / Symfony Messenger), dead-letter queues, and scheduled jobs

  • Work with search and analytics infrastructure (OpenSearch) ingesting nightly device telemetry and

serving on-demand clinical summaries

  • Manage performance, caching (memcache), and scalability across Linux-based, AWS-backed

environments (S3, SES), collaborating with DevOps on Docker/DDEV-based local dev and Jenkins

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, including leading or mentoring other

engineers

  • Deep, current expertise in Drupal (10/11): Entity API, plugin system (attribute-based plugins),

hooks/event subscribers, Views, configuration management (Composer, Drush), and custom module

architecture

  • Strong PHP 8.x skills with modern practices: strict types, dependency injection, PSR standards, and

comfort with static analysis tooling

  • Experience running applications on the LAMP stack: Linux systems administration and MySQL at

scale

  • Experience building and consuming APIs in a headless/decoupled architecture (JSON:API, REST,

GraphQL, or JSON-RPC)

  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience using AI coding assistants-especially Claude / Claude

Code-in real-world production development, including agentic workflows

  • Ability to critically review and validate AI-generated code, with sound judgment about when not to

rely on AI

  • Responsible and secure use of AI tools in environments with sensitive or regulated data
  • Experience with automated testing (PHPUnit; Behat or Cypress a plus) and a commitment to

maintainable test coverage

  • Fluency with Git and PR-based review workflows

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience in healthcare or another regulated domain-handling PHI/PII, audit logging, encryption

at rest, and compliance frameworks such as HIPAA, SOC 2, or HITRUST

  • Experience with queue-based background processing and data migration pipelines at scale

(millions of records)

  • Experience integrating third-party vendor APIs with OAuth2/SAML/OpenID Connect authentication

Nice to Have

  • Experience with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch
  • Experience with DevOps tooling: Docker, DDEV, Jenkins, or similar CI/CD
  • Familiarity with AWS services (S3, SES) and caching layers (memcache, Redis, Varnish)
  • Comfort in an Agile / sprint-based workflow with Jira or Linear
  • Experience with the Anthropic Claude API, MCP tooling, or building agentic developer workflows
