Job description

Within your role as Senior Software Engineer (Java), no two days will look the same. With a variety of projects across our technology estate, there is always something new to learn. You will join an established and talented Software Engineering function of over 150 engineers, ranging from Apprentices through to Solution Architects.

We are committed to helping our people grow and succeed, providing a clear career development pathway, alongside training, mentoring and support to help you reach your full potential.

As a 12-month fixed-term contract, this role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on key business-critical projects while working with modern technologies and a highly collaborative engineering team.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll be involved in a variety of software development projects, taking ownership of technical delivery while supporting and mentoring other engineers. You’ll contribute to sprint planning, design discussions, code reviews, product releases and continuous improvement initiatives.

Working across both backend and frontend technologies, you’ll help design, develop and maintain scalable applications using technologies including Java, Spring Boot, Azure, SQL Server, TypeScript, Angular and SCSS/SASS.

Ways of Working

  • Monthly: Contribute to stakeholder demonstrations and product reviews, support the product release cycle, generate technical reports, participate in mobile development activities, and provide engineering input across ongoing projects.
  • Fortnightly: Take part in planning sessions, retrospectives, sprint reviews, and team demos, helping to shape delivery priorities and drive continuous improvement.
  • Weekly: Engage in public code reviews, engineering dojos, and refinement sessions to enhance code quality, shared understanding, and team capability.
  • Daily: Participate in stand-ups, perform unit testing, submit and review pull requests, conduct code reviews, resolve defects, reduce technical debt, monitor system performance, contribute to design work, and collaborate through katas and pair programming.

Requirements

  • A degree in Computer Science or a closely related technical discipline.
  • A strong understanding of fundamental computer science principles and the ability to apply them to real-world engineering challenges.
  • Demonstrable experience working as a Senior Software Engineer within a commercial software development environment.
  • Significant hands-on experience with Java and the wider Java ecosystem, including designing, developing, testing and maintaining enterprise-scale applications.
  • Strong experience developing solutions using Spring Boot, RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.
  • Experience building cloud-based applications using Azure or a comparable cloud platform, with an understanding of scalable, reliable and maintainable application design.
  • Strong database experience, including Microsoft SQL Server and ORM technologies such as Hibernate/JPA.
  • Experience developing modern web applications using TypeScript, Angular and SCSS/SASS.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented programming concepts, design patterns and SOLID principles.
  • Proficiency in SQL, with the ability to write efficient, optimised queries and collaborate effectively with database specialists.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining automated tests, including unit and integration testing.
  • Knowledge of software performance optimisation, profiling and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching engineers at different stages of their careers.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative team culture focused on knowledge sharing, continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
  • A proactive approach to learning new technologies and improving engineering practices.
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality software and maintaining exceptional engineering standards.
