Job description

The backend engineer will build and maintain the platform services that AI agents and the frontend application depend on. Work will span:

  • API design and implementation - RESTful and event-driven service APIs for asset management, configuration, telemetry access, and workflow orchestration
  • Service integrations - Connecting platform capabilities to shared services including identity and access management, weather data, utility tariff data, notification delivery, and audit logging
  • Real-time telemetry pipeline - Processing industrial telemetry from MQTT/Sparkplug B message streams via Azure Event Hub, including message decoding, metric normalization, knowledge-graph-based enrichment, and downstream publishing
  • Command and control path - Implementing the outbound command path to industrial equipment with acknowledgement verification
  • Data persistence and query - Working with time-series databases, graph databases, and object storage to support operational and analytical workloads
  • Infrastructure and deployment - Containerized services running on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code

Requirements

  • Strong Python and/or Java development (3+ years production experience)
  • Experience designing and building microservices on Azure (AKS, Event Hub, Event Grid, Azure Data Explorer, Cosmos DB, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures and message brokers (Kafka, Event Hub, MQTT)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm)
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps Pipelines)
  • Comfort with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Bicep, or Pulumi)

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with industrial protocols (Sparkplug B, OPC-UA, Modbus, BACnet, SNMP)
  • Background in energy management, SCADA, or building management systems
  • Familiarity with graph databases or RDF triple stores
  • Experience with time-series data at scale (Azure Data Explorer / Kusto, InfluxDB, TimescaleDB)

Benefits & conditions

$45 - $50 an hour - Contract
