Job description

The Global Head of Technology Journalism will develop and lead the delivery of a strategy to ensure our reporters:

  • collaborate to produce truly global technology journalism
  • cover significant stories involving the companies, people and cultural forces shaping technology and how it affects society
  • break exclusive stories that result in real- world impact, promoting transparency and accountability in the tech sector
  • deliver our journalism to audiences through a variety of digital formats, including video and newsletters

You will also be responsible for coordinating global technology projects and investigations.

Ideally the Global Head of Technology Journalism has multimedia experience and will be able to develop and enrich the Guardian’s technology coverage on- and off-platform, driving audience growth and engagement.

Working with senior editors in the US, UK and Australia, the Global Head of Technology Journalism will shape editorial priorities across regions, determine where the organisation should focus its reporting resources and which emerging areas require sustained coverage, with special attention to the intersection of tech and power. You will connect reporters and editors across time zones into a single collaborative network, ensuring a genuinely global technology desk with around-the-clock reporting capability and shared editorial standards., * Define and lead the global editorial vision for technology coverage across all regions.

  • Identify the most important global technology themes and ensure sustained, authoritative and ground-breaking coverage.
  • Develop editorial frameworks for major areas including (but not limited to):
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Big Tech and platform power
  • Regulation and antitrust
  • Tech lobbying and political influence
  • Social media and online culture
  • Cybersecurity and surveillance
  • Digital labour and automation
  • Climate and technology
  • Consumer technology
  • Startups and innovation
  • Technology policy and geopolitics
  • Coordinate reporting efforts between US, UK and Australian teams to maximise impact for daily reporting, investigations, features, explainers and long-term editorial projects and foster a collaborative culture.
  • Create systems for seamless editorial handovers across time zones.
  • Lead regular cross-office planning meetings and editorial reviews.
  • Ensure major global stories receive coordinated coverage with regional expertise and local angles.
  • Ensure that technology coverage is accessible to lay readers and engaging to global audiences
  • Identify gaps in coverage and work to build up reporting on currently under-covered areas
  • Encourage collaboration between technology journalists and reporters on adjacent beats including politics, business, media, science and culture.
  • Work closely with audience, SEO, visuals, video, audio and product teams to expand the reach and impact of technology journalism.
  • Develop coverage formats suited to digital audiences across all platforms, including live blogs, newsletters, podcasts, explainers and visual storytelling.
  • Help position the Guardian as a destination for authoritative and accessible technology journalism.
  • Use audience data and reader behaviour insights to refine coverage strategy without compromising editorial standards.
  • Represent the Guardian publicly on technology journalism and industry trends.
  • Build relationships with sources across global technology hubs. Participate in conferences, panels and media partnerships where appropriate.

  • Regional heads of news; regional desk editors across beats including national and international news, business and environment; multimedia teams; audience teams.

Requirements

  • Significant senior editorial leadership experience within a major newsroom, digital publisher or international media organisation.
  • Deep experience covering technology, digital platforms, business, politics or related areas,
  • Demonstrated ability to lead reporters and editors across multiple locations and time zones.
  • Experience managing complex breaking news coverage alongside long-term original and investigative reporting.
  • Proven record of commissioning and editing high-impact stories, investigations and analysis.
  • Experience developing editorial strategy tied to audience growth and digital engagement.
  • Strong understanding of newsroom operations, workflows and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Sophisticated understanding of the global technology industry, including major companies, regulatory dynamics and emerging trends.
  • Exceptional editorial judgment and news instincts.
  • Strong organisational and strategic planning abilities.
  • Skilled at mentoring and developing journalists at different career stages.
  • Calm and decisive leadership under deadline pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; adept at communicating with senior stakeholders across editorial and business functions.
  • Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role.
  • Actively demonstrate inclusive leadership by promoting equity, valuing diverse perspectives, and addressing barriers that affect your team.
