Job description

To strengthen our engineering team in Vienna, we are looking for a Java / Kotlin Backend Developer (m/f/d) who enjoys working on scalable backend systems, contributing to platform stability and performance, and collaborating across teams to continuously improve our product. Tech Stack

Backend: Java, Spring (our Monolith) / Kotlin, Micronaut (all new feature development) Architecture: A pragmatic hybrid architecture with a Java/Spring monolith and Kotlin/Micronaut microservices. The migration is already well advanced, with selected components intentionally remaining in the monolith. Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, Private Cloud CI/CD: Git-based pipelines Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic Stack Your Environment

You will be working in a cross-functional product team consisting of Backend and Frontend Engineers, QA, DevOps, Product Management, and Architecture.

Current team setup: 4 Backend Developers, 2 Frontend Developers, 1 Software Architect, 1 DevOps Engineer, 1 QA Engineer, 2 Product Managers, 1 Engineering Manager, and CTO.

We are actively growing the team, with plans to expand to 6 Backend Developers and 2 QA Engineers.

The role focuses primarily on new feature development (currently approx. 90%), while also addressing technical debt pragmatically as part of ongoing product development.

Requirements

  • Professional experience developing backend systems using Java.
  • Experience working with Kotlin or strong interest in adopting Kotlin in production systems.
  • Experience building scalable backend services in a SaaS or distributed systems environment.
  • Experience working with Spring, Micronaut or comparable backend frameworks.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Strong understanding of software design principles, clean code and maintainable architectures.
  • Experience working in agile development environments.
  • A structured and solution-oriented mindset combined with strong analytical thinking.
  • Interest in performance optimization, scalability, and backend system design.
  • Comfortable working in modern development environments with strong focus on automation and tooling.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code is a plus, or openness to integrating such tools into your daily workflow.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a cross-functional team.
