Job description
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and evolve backend systems that power core gameplay and live-service operations at scale. You will take ownership of complex technical problems, improve system reliability and performance, and help guide engineering quality across the team while partnering closely with cross-functional stakeholders.
What Youâll Do
- Lead the design, development, and long-term maintenance of backend systems that support core gameplay, live events, progression, rewards, social features, and platform capabilities.
- Own complex technical areas across APIs, game logic, async processing, caching, persistence, and operational tooling.
- Design and deliver scalable, maintainable server-side solutions within a large Python and Django codebase serving a live game.
- Drive improvements to system reliability, performance, code health, observability, and developer workflows.
- Architect and evolve asynchronous job systems, scheduled event workflows, and backend processes that support live game operations.
- Partner with product, design, QA, analytics, and engineering leadership to shape technical solutions and execution plans for high-impact features.
- Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, debugging support, and hands-on technical guidance.
- Identify technical debt, operational risks, and scaling bottlenecks, and proactively drive improvements.
- Support live service excellence by helping investigate incidents, improve operational readiness, and harden production systems.

Experience & Technical Skills
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, ideally in the gaming industry, live-service products, or large-scale backend systems.
- Deep backend engineering expertise in Python and object-oriented programming.
- Proven experience designing and maintaining scalable backend systems, internal platforms, and RESTful APIs.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, service-oriented architecture, and backend integration patterns.
- Hands-on experience with Redis, DynamoDB, and data modeling for high-throughput, performance-sensitive applications.
- Proven experience designing and supporting asynchronous job systems, scheduled workflows, and event-driven backend processes.
- Strong experience debugging complex production issues and improving system performance, scalability, and resilience.
- Familiarity with Docker and cloud infrastructure, especially AWS-based systems and development workflows.
- Strong grasp of algorithms, data structures, system design, and engineering tradeoffs in long-lived production systems.
- Experience improving code quality, testing practices, and maintainability across large shared codebases.
Cross-Functional and Game-Specific Knowledge
- Experience building backend systems for gameplay features, progression, rewards, social systems, live events, or other player-facing live-service functionality.
- Exposure to integrating game clients such as Unity with backend services.
- Strong understanding of analytics, telemetry, operational tooling, and live-ops execution in a live game environment.
- Experience working closely with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver features that balance player experience, speed, and technical quality.
- Comfortable operating in Agile/Scrum environments and helping teams execute effectively through ambiguity.
Soft Skills & Education
- Bachelorâs degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical decisions to both technical and non-technical partners.
- Demonstrated mentorship and technical leadership experience.
