Job description

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll be instrumental in building and maintaining robust and scalable backend systems. You’ll independently tackle significant development tasks, contribute to project delivery, and collaborate closely with the team on feature implementation and issue resolution. You’ll also play a key role in cross-team collaboration, essential for building and growing our platform for other Wise teams. This includes documenting at the appropriate abstraction level to scale the adoption of our developments. We’re looking for a proactive individual with a strong foundation in backend technologies, a passion for writing clean and efficient code, and a desire to learn and grow within a supportive environment.

Requirements

Technical Excellence

  • 3+ years of experience with Java or other JVM-based languages, and hands-on experience with the Spring framework.
  • A track record of writing clean, maintainable code and a strong belief in best practices like code reviews, open feedback, and continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with backend development, including databases (SQL/NoSQL), synchronous/asynchronous communication, and distributed systems.
  • Experience with web development technologies such as REST APIs, microservices, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • The ability to design technical solutions that balance latency, throughput, adaptability and scalability.
  • A passion for learning new technologies, tools, and patterns to solve problems effectively.

Product Mindset

  • A customer-first approach - you prioritize work that solves real customer pain points and use data to drive decisions.
  • The ability to take ownership of problems, propose solutions, and drive projects end-to-end to deliver measurable impact.
  • A knack for identifying opportunities to deliver value faster and providing constructive feedback on product and design decisions.

Collaboration

  • Strong communication skills - you can break down complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • A proactive mindset - you take initiative to improve our codebase, architecture, and processes.
  • A passion for knowledge sharing - you enjoy fostering a culture of learning within the team.
