Job description

The Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Microcontrollers (MCUs) team is responsible for developing the embedded software that provides the foundation of our AVs. Our software communicates with sensors, provides observability, enables autonomous operation, and manages system health.

As a Software Engineering Manager on the AV MCU Platform team, you will play a vital role in the design, development, delivery, and deployment of embedded software for MCUs on the AV. You will leverage your experience leading engineering teams and developing complex embedded systems to deliver highly impactful software, the foundation of world-class AV features and experiences. You will work cross functionally to extract and deliver on the needs of your stakeholders.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead, grow, and develop a team of embedded software engineers focused on AV MCU software.

  • Set technical direction, define execution priorities, and align the team on key engineering outcomes.

  • Partner closely with hardware, systems, middleware, test, manufacturing, program, and other cross-functional teams.

  • Drive delivery of high-quality production software that is safe, reliable, well-architected, testable, and delivered on schedule.

  • Establish and continuously improve engineering processes, including design reviews, code quality practices, debugging, root cause analysis, test coverage, and release readiness.

  • Remove team roadblocks and manage tradeoffs across scope, schedule, technical risk, and quality.

  • Mentor engineers and technical leads, build succession plans, and foster a high-performance culture centered on ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with Engineering Managers and Tech Leads to define and communicate technical direction and product strategy while anticipating scaling and long-term strategic challenges.

  • Promote a strong cross-functional culture of testing, safety, quality, and documentation across teams at GM.

  • Work with your team, Technical Project Managers, and external stakeholders to build, prioritize, and execute an engineering roadmap.

  • Conduct performance reviews, identify and develop top talent, and support growth into Technical Leadership and Engineering Management roles.

  • Partner with recruiting and leadership to build the organization and attract strong embedded and platform engineering talent., This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or work equivalent experience

  • 8+ years of experience in embedded software, systems software, or platform software

  • 2+ years of engineering management or technical team leadership experience

  • Strong experience with embedded C and C++

  • Self-motivated to lead your team, encourage best practices, and constantly improve

  • Excellent communication, execution, and people leadership skills

  • Experience managing an engineering team and initiatives in a mission-critical and fast-paced engineering organization

  • Experience identifying and driving process improvements

  • Successfully hired and onboarded new team members

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with DO-178, ISO-26262, or IEC-62304, and safety critical systems

  • Experience with SoCs, Embedded Linux, and complex Embedded Systems

  • Exposure to Linux kernel, IPC, kernel device drivers, GPU drivers
  • Experience with AUTOSAR, and Automotive Embedded Systems

  • Strategic, collaborative, and execution-focused

What Makes You Successful

  • You can operate effectively at both technical depth and organizational leadership altitude

  • You know how to build strong teams while maintaining a high bar for engineering quality

  • You are comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and driving alignment across multiple stakeholders

  • You translate complex platform challenges into clear priorities, execution plans, and business outcomes

  • You bring urgency, ownership, and a continuous improvement mindset to platform development
