Job description
Young Management & Consulting (YMC) is seeking motivated, detail-oriented, and safety-focused GIS Crew Members to support electric utility, transmission, distribution, gas, telecommunications, and infrastructure projects. This position is responsible for collecting, verifying, updating, and maintaining accurate Geographic Information System (GIS) data through field investigations, GPS data collection, and documentation of utility assets.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, has strong attention to detail, and understands utility construction practices, mapping standards, and field data collection techniques. This position works closely with GIS Analysts, Engineers, Inspectors, Survey Crews, and Construction personnel to ensure accurate utility asset records.
Key ResponsibilitiesGIS Field Data Collection
- Collect, verify, and update GIS data for electric transmission, distribution, gas, telecommunications, and related utility assets.
- Utilize GPS equipment, tablets, mobile GIS applications, and field mapping software to accurately capture asset locations.
- Verify existing GIS records against actual field conditions.
- Document newly installed, modified, or retired utility assets.
- Identify discrepancies between field conditions, construction drawings, and GIS databases.
- Perform field inspections of poles, underground facilities, substations, conduits, manholes, transformers, switches, valves, and associated infrastructure.
Mapping & Documentation
- Update GIS databases using field-collected information.
- Record GPS coordinates and attribute data with a high degree of accuracy.
- Complete field sketches and redline drawings as required.
- Maintain organized field notes and supporting documentation.
- Ensure all collected data complies with company GIS standards and quality requirements.
- Assist with as-built documentation following construction activities.
Construction Support
- Coordinate with construction crews, inspectors, engineers, and project managers.
- Verify utility installations prior to GIS record updates.
- Support utility asset inventories and system audits.
- Assist during project closeout by validating completed installations.
- Identify mapping conflicts and recommend corrections.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow OSHA regulations and all client safety requirements.
- Conduct work in accordance with utility operating procedures.
- Participate in daily safety briefings and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Report unsafe conditions and potential hazards immediately.
- Maintain situational awareness while working around energized electrical equipment, active roadways, and construction activities., Documentation Responsibilities

Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate’s Degree in GIS, Surveying, Geography, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
- 1-5+ years of GIS, utility mapping, surveying, or utility field experience preferred.
- Experience supporting electric transmission, distribution, gas, telecommunications, or infrastructure projects preferred.
- Familiarity with GPS data collection equipment.
- Working knowledge of GIS principles and mapping standards.
- Ability to read utility construction drawings, maps, and as-built plans.
- Basic understanding of electric utility assets and field operations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with mobile GIS applications preferred.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined or difficult-to-access locations.
- Ability to travel to project sites as required.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction
- First Aid/CPR
- ESRI ArcGIS Certification (preferred)
- Trimble GPS Training (preferred)
- Utility Locator Certification (preferred)
- DOT Medical Card (if required by project)
